Introduction Nokia N70

Second device from Nokia N series, the N70 stands out for its abundance of multimedia features. Compatible with 3G and Edge, it has increased connectivity. Multimedia is not forgotten with a camera 2 million pixels, a video function, music player and FM radio. True smartphone, based on Symbian OS 8.1. Everything is served in a typical design of the Finnish firm, rather fleshy one piece.

Symbol of convergence when it debuted in late 2006, the Nokia N70 is still as competitive in a changing world?

Positive points:
- Compatibility 3G/Edge
- Camera 2 megapixel
- Quality of MP3 player
- Expandable memory
Negatives:
- No AF
- Some decelerations
- Keyboard keys are too small
- Pictures are often blurred

The delivery kit is fairly complete Nokia N70. Besides classics like the USB cable or the stereo kit, there is a strap to hang the phone on your wrist and a rag to wipe off fingerprints from the screen of the mobile. The presence of a memory card is valuable even if the 64 MB will not allow you to store enormous files.

Found in the box:
- The Nokia N70
- Charger
- A USB cable
- A stereo kit
- The manual
- An installation CD
- A 64 MB MMC memory card
- A strap
- A cloth to clean the screen

Very close to the Nokia 6680 in terms of design, the N70 adopts a fairly large format piece. Its dimensions: 109 x 53 x 22 mm and weighing 126 grams make it a heavyweight in mobile telephony. It might possibly slip into the pocket of your coat, but not in that of your last jean "slim". Despite this template, once in hand, the Nokia N70 does not seem so cumbersome that.
In terms of finish, quality of materials is exemplary. The brushed aluminum front panel goes perfectly with black plastic. The assembly is calibrated in mm: nothing moves except the removable flap on the back of the terminal. The latter reveals the purpose of the camera and protects from dust. The slide is of high quality. The screen displays 262,144 colors. He has a good brightness and contrast acceptable. Even in a bright environment, the display remains readable. The keyboard keys are too small, however. Spelling errors are frequent, especially when writing SMS.

On both sides of the keyboard keys are arranged "shortcut" to access the menu interface, the gallery, entering text (pencil key) or cancel the function. The blue backlight is the most beautiful effect. The joystick is precise, as the confirmation button in the center. On the left spine, a dedicated button lets you take pictures. Just above there is the memory expansion port. MMC card can be inserted or removed at any time. There is no need to turn off the phone to perform the operation.
Using the Nokia N70

Compatible with both 3G and Edge, the Nokia N70 is a specialist in mobile broadband. You can fully enjoy the download and browsing at high speed. Streaming video and video telephony are also scheduled. However, the quality is pretty average too pixelated images and the experience to extend beyond twenty minutes. With such network connections it was entitled to expect poor results in terms of autonomy. The N70 is doing pretty well. In our tests, the battery ran out in 3 days of average use. Which is higher than many 3G terminals recently released. The traction system has also proved satisfactory. Communication, the acoustics are very good, even in a noisy environment. No echo phenomenon has not been evident.

Equipped with the Symbian OS, the N70 has some delays when loading certain applications, especially the gallery. True smartphone, the Nokia can retrieve e-mails and takes into account most of the attachments: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF. Ideal for businessmen nostalgic office.
MP3 player of Nokia N70

The MP3 player is available from the menu "Gallery" or via a dedicated button right below the screen. It is divided into multiple folders to organize your songs according to different criteria: All Songs, Playlists, Artists or Albums. The N70 is far from being a music phone. The music interface is very poor. The settings are not possible due to the lack of an equalizer. The sound is excellent, however. He does not sizzle at all, even when the volume is pushed up. The speaker, like the stereo kit offer a refund of voice and bass very loyal.

Unfortunately there is no standard jack or Bluetooth stereo connection prevents audio accessories of your choice.
Storage is provided by the internal memory of 30 MB, aided by a memory expansion slot MMC format. The delivery kit includes a 64 MB card latter can pick a dozen titles. The purchase of a higher model proves necessary.
Finally, the N70 is not for the most demanding music lovers. But its sound quality is superior to many terminals stamped musicphone. In addition, the radio function is entertaining and effective.

Nokia N70 Connectors

As for connectivity, the Nokia N70 has Bluetooth and USB connection. Both solutions are working properly. Via wireless, you will have ten seconds to transfer a 2-megapixel camera and between 2 and 3 minutes for a 4 MB music file to the USB cable is supplied with the phone. Synchronizing the phone with a computer is easy. However, file transfers are long enough. A problem already present on most smartphones from the manufacturer. Only Infrared lacking a bit unfortunate absence given the slowness of this function.

On advantage that musicphone cameraphone, the N70 has a camera 2 million pixels. It is located on the back of the terminal, behind a protective sliding the retaining safe from shocks and dust. A flash is also present. However, no autofocus. The optical model is a CMOS, Carl Zeiss model different from the popular N90 now. The photo application launches automatically when you slide the slide. To take a snapshot, two solutions: validation button in the center of the joystick or remote button on the left edge, in the slot for the memory card. Note that a second camera is present on the front. The latter is mainly used for video telephony function, but few also prove useful for the realization of self-portraits. However, its low resolution (0.3 Megapixel) prevents any use of photos.

Photos

The options menu "Camera" are numerous:
- Image setup:
- Shooting mode (Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Night, Sport)
- Flash (Auto, Forced On / Forced Off)
- White balance (Auto, Sunny, Cloudy, Incandescent, Fluorescent)
- Colour tone (Normal, Sepia, Black & White, Negative)
- Use secondary camera
- Self-timer (10, 20, 30 seconds)
- Sequence mode
- Go to gallery
- Help
- Parameters
- Image quality (Low, Medium, High)
- Add to Album
- Zoom Extents
- Show captured
- Default image name
- Memory usage

Even if the settings are very numerous, it is advisable to use the least possible. Indeed, they offer little of interest and do not improve the film quality. In full resolution, the pictures taken with the N70 are correct. The colors are well rendered, especially greens and blues. The level of detail is acceptable but could have been much more accurate with autofocus. The recording time of images is shorter than previous models, but still higher than most other mobile manufacturers. The major flaw of the N70's sensor is too low tolerance for his movements. In fact, unless you use a tripod or wedge the phone, the pictures are often fuzzy and lack contrast between the first and second place.
The LED flash is unconvincing. It should not be used in lighting conditions too dark. More subjects photographed should be between 1.50 and 2 meters to get a fair result.

Videos

The video function also has many settings:
- Shooting mode (Auto or Night)
- White balance
- Color Tint
- Audio recording
- Video Quality (low, normal, high)
- ...

The result is, as usual, unusable on a medium other than your phone. Once transferred to a computer, all defects are: coarse pixelization, choppiness, its inaudible ...
For aspiring filmmakers, do not worry the video should be one of the new trends of 2007.
Menu Nokia N70
