Nokia 6120

The Nokia 6120 has a display 16 million colors, 240 x 320 pixels in dimensions of 46 x 105 x 15 mm and weighs 89 grams.
The Nokia 6120 has a camera, 2 megapixel (1600 x 1200 pixels), flash, 4x digital zoom, panorama mode, video camera, 2nd camera for video telephony. It also has bluetooth.
It has an internal memory of 35MB, and has a TransFlash card reader. The Nokia 6120 is compatible with HSDPA / Quad Band (GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900).
It is available in stores since August 2007 at a price of 90 € (cons € 299).

Introduction

Presented by Nokia in April 2007, the 6120 Classic is a smartphone running the Symbian S60. Offered at a price rather content (about 250 €), this model first and foremost on its affordable price for a camera in this class to conquer the masses. No camera driven, integrated GPS or even WLAN, this model is a basic text, but no shortage of arguments so far ...

Positive points:
- Small size
- Line sober and goes everywhere
- Price for a smartphone content
- Layer-generation phone
- USB Connection
Negatives:
- Photo quality rather limited
- Basic audio player
Package Contents

Given the rather small price for such equipment, accessories are quite generous:

- The Nokia 6120
- A battery BL-5B (890Mah)
- Quick charger
- A stereo headset
- A USB cable DKE-2
- The various manuals and CDs

The USB cable is a nice surprise, but it is nonetheless unfortunate that the battery has no more capacity and no memory card is available.

External analysis

Given its limited features, the Nokia 6120 has very contained dimensions for a smartphone (less than 90 grams on the scale!). It is really nice to have a camera so compact, but powerful at a time (the S60 to add a lot of functionality to the terminal).

Offered in several colors, the version tested here is dressed in black and gray. At once sober and classy fans of mobile design dared pass their way.
The shell has a glossy finish, which unfortunately will quickly attract fingerprints and other small claws.

The manufacturing quality of the assembly is correct: nothing moves or does not creak, but the plastic reigns supreme.

The screen has a nice QVGA (320 * 240 pixels), but it is a pity that its size is so small (2 inches only).

Text input is facilitated through the keyboard has keys large and flat.

A real smartphone at heart

As already mentioned, the embedded operating system in this model is Symbian S60. This is good news because this system is the most popular worldwide, and boasts a vast repository.

The reactivity of the terminal is very good for such devices, it is at the latest smartphones of the brand. Only the startup is still a bit long: around 30 seconds, taking off your PIN code in advance.

Without being more complete, this model offers the essential functions for a Symbian phone Current: UMTS and HSDPA compatibility, second goal for video calls, Bluetooth 2.0, ...

The multimedia side is covered by an FM radio (still without RDS) and a music player rather conventional. Real Player will be responsible for its share of videos.
So a little thin, but equipment dedicated to such tasks exist in the constructor.

The integrated camera will produce photographs of average quality. You should not expect better in the absence of autofocus or flash.

Menus Nokia 6120

Originally, the menus are organized like this:

1) Messaging:

This menu contains your SMS, MMS and your various mailboxes you have configured.
The memory used will depend on your preferences (internal memory or memory card).
Smileys still not integrated into the software, too bad.

2) Contacts

This is your telephone directory. The sorting is done, by choice, by name or surname. Creating and managing groups of contacts is possible.
Obviously you can associate a ringtone and a dedicated photo to a contact. Nothing new here then.

3) Journal

It's your call log, which references your dialed / received / missed as well as SMS and network connections (GPRS or 3G).

4) Parameters

This is where you configure many of the functions of your 6120, such as Internet accounts, the themes, the language of your phone, power the backlight of the screen ...
Connectivity (Bluetooth) will also be set in this submenu.

5) Web

WAP and Web sites are available on the browser.
The latter is based on the foundation of Apple's Safari browser.

When navigating on a Web page, you will see a page view, complete with a red square delimiting the sight of your screen relative to the current page. When returning to a previous page, thumbnails of the pages visited during the current session will be proposed to avoid a return on an unwanted page.

We are still far from what Apple has introduced with its iPhone, but this Web browser is already good enough for mobile use in my opinion. I do not stand by the fact that a laptop is always more fun to browse a mobile phone, regardless of the size of its screen or its embedded browser.

6) Multimedia

- Voice: This voice recorder from 6120. In the settings you can choose the recording quality and file locations enregistrés.Les high quality voice memos are saved in wave (. Wav), another good point for interoperability.

- Radio: Like many Nokia, the 6120 integrates a stereo FM radio. This is the version "Visual Radio", which may, if desired, get data through the network as GPRS/3G available stations. I personally have never used the "visual".
By cons it is a shame that Nokia still does not function on a mobile multimedia RDS this range, while Sony Ericsson has implemented this feature with his K750i, it has been almost 3 years. The sound quality and reception is average.
It is always necessary to connect a headset to use the radio (it will serve as an antenna), but listening through the speaker obviously poses no problems.
As for the music player, the current station will be indicated on the home screen.

- Flash: Flash Player on your 6120

- RealPlayer video player that comes with the Symbian S60 since their inception.

- Camera: The camera then the Nokia 6120 has not dazzled by the quality of his photographs. No flash or focus, even manual, and a seemingly optical quality than average are the cause. The proposed settings are not many either.

7) Organizer

NOKIA 6120 - Menu 30

- Converter: Already for many years, this handy converter can convert various units (lengths, temperatures, surfaces, ...)

NOKIA 6120 - Menu 31

- Agenda: Nothing new here either. The display is possible for a month or week.
The appointment of the current day will be reported on the home screen, as proposed by smartphones and PDAs running Windows Mobile over the past few years.

NOKIA 6120 - Menu 32

- Notes: Software memo that has existed since the beginnings of the S60 OS. The notes are saved in text format (. Txt), which is a big plus for the exchange of notes between devices (all devices from all brands, or nearly all, are compatible. Txt).
The timing of notes is apparently possible via PC Suite.

NOKIA 6120 - Menu 33

- Calculator: Calculator (not scientific) classic

NOKIA 6120 - Menu 34

- Clock: Everything about the date and time is here, as setting the alarm, for example. We can manage several different alarms, alarm or not. It is also possible to add cities in the world to see the local time.

NOKIA 6120 - Menu 35

8) Audio player: Even if this app is correct, it is far from the music player the Nokia N95 or N73ME. The possibilities here are really lower.
The original headphones are higher quality than average, and will mostly use headset.
But the sound is more "impressive" without a helmet thanks to the good quality of speakers built into the phone.
So do not expect to use your 6120 as a true MP3 player performance, an N95 or N73ME be more suitable for such use.

9) Gallery

You can view all your media files from 6120, be it videos, photos, pictures classics, songs (this will open the music player just described above).
The files are classified by type, but you can also consult together.
The display of thumbnails is not as carousel here, but simply as a list of thumbnails.

10) Applications:

- Custom: list of software you have installed.

- Games: Marble City Casino HighRoller Box and originally shipped.

- QuickOffice: Like most of its models running Symbian S60, Nokia has built an office suite in 6120. By cons, it is only possible to view documents without upgrading (and pay extra) software, too bad.
The software will automatically detect the documents in the memory of your 6120.

NOKIA 6120 - Menu 48

- Adobe PDF: S60 version of the famous PDF reader.

- Download! This small program list by referencing software compatible with your Nokia 6120, whose software already included on your phone.
You can also download the example program for downloading podcasts developed by Nokia.
For some programs, you will be redirected to EA Games or Amazon. Station to the data plan though!
Part telephony and autonomy:

With a layer quadband GSM and UMTS + HSDPA compatibility, the 6120 is a model of its kind, it lacks the WLAN to be perfect.
As usual with the brand, the level of reception is very correct, as the sound quality in speaker mode.

On autonomy, rather modest capacity of the battery will not exceed 2-3 days in normal use. Prolonged use of HSDPA surfing course will empty it in a few hours, as on most current 3G phones.

Finding on the Nokia 6120

With this Nokia 6120, Nokia is seeking to democratize its Symbian S60 smartphones: small size, design goes everywhere, prices rather light, various colors (black, white and pink now) make this phone an excellent choice for those wishing to embark the world of "smart phones" without investing in a device costing about 500 € ...
However, it is a pity that the photo part is so neglected, as the integrated MP3 player.
