It is available since November 2007 in retail stores from 129 € (against 289 €).

Introduction

At a retail price around 250 €, the 5310 music phone is a rather affordable, unlike the N95 8GB for example.

The goal here is to propose a phone now offering only essential functions and equipped with an audio portion well developed and promoted.

Its price is equivalent to the W880i, and their functions are also very close. As a reminder, a more complete model is also present in the XpressMusic range: the 5610.

Positive points:
- Very good finish
- Screen quality
- Small size
- Connectivity (almost) complete
- Good audio performance
Negatives:
Camera - average basic and videos
- Some regret the lack of 3G connectivity

Package Contents

Here's what the box contains the 5310:

- Mobile Phone Nokia 5310 XpressMusic
- Battery BL-4CT (860mAh)
- Charger (AC-3)
- Stereo Headset (HS-45)
- Wired Remote (AD57)
- Micro USB cable (CA-101)
- Micro SD 2GB (MU-37)
- The various manuals and installation CD

The box is very comprehensive, it lacks nothing except possibly a cover. The original 2GB card supplied is a very good initiative by the manufacturer and avoid the possible purchase of a larger capacity model. Be aware that the 5310 supports cards up to 4GB Micro SD officially.

EDGE but not 3G

The 5310 supports GPRS and EDGE, which will suffice for most users. It is however unfortunate and rare, a phone coming to market in 2008 to more than 250 € do overlook the UMTS compatibility. It is the presence of console with Bluetooth 2.0, A2DP equipped to broadcast in stereo sound on the speakers or wireless headsets.

Regarding autonomy, the 5310 should be recharged every 3 days, with a little push use (a few scores of text messages and call minutes per day). In pure audio use, the battery is given for an autonomy of 20 hours.

Getting Started

Once in hand, the terminal is immediately appreciated for its smoothness (less than one inch thick) and lightweight (about 70 grams). The Samsung "Ultra" is even thinner, but are generally quite broad stroke.

The dimensions are very close to a Sony Ericsson W880i.

The shell, composed primarily of plastic and aluminum, seems well assembled and has no defects or cracks.

The keyboard is also well finished, with keys well proportioned and pleasing to the touch, while the audio player keys located on the side of the screen will be useful if you want to plug your own headphones directly into the output jack 3.5 mm phone.

At his side, we find an outlet format micro-USB hidden under a small plastic flap.

The rear sports a carbon finish and includes, in addition to the camera 2 million pixels, three holes behind which is the speaker of the mobile.

A classic S40

Like most phones not smartphones of the brand, the 5310 runs Nokia's S40 system. The interface is still as fluid and simple to use, and some topics unique to the XpressMusic range are given to remind the young and musical side of the phone.

Only Java applications allow you to add functionality to 5310, and some have already installed the original, like "Opera Mini" or "Yahoo Go!". Can not use a GPS navigation software such as TomTom, so even if Google offers a Java version of Google Maps that also provides some navigation functions.

Let the music play

The main attraction of 5310 is of course his musical side, highlighted by a dedicated chip to decode your songs digitized and finally compatible FM radio with RDS, a first for the Finnish manufacturer (and the 6500 Slide 5610 also have this feature)!

Like Sony Ericsson, several themes are available for the audio player. Good news: it manages the display of covers of your songs, as is the case on smartphones multimedia brand.

Browsing through your music library is easy and classic: you can sort your songs by artist, album or song title for example, as long as you have completed your MP3 tags of course.

Regarding sound quality, headset, though not very attractive, provides a good quality sound, surpassing the number of dedicated MP3 players. We would have preferred a model intra atrial as those offered in the range of Walkman phones which have the advantage of isolating ambient noise, although some people prefer a conventional helmet. The speaker will lavish him sound average but adequate.

Camera unconvincing

After this performance audio, we stayed on our side of the hunger of the camera. Limited by the lack of focus or flash, the performance of the latter are actually average at best.

The video is also not in the spotlight with a maximum resolution that does not exceed 176 * 144 pixels. Unusable outside the MMS so.
Menus

1) Messaging

This menu is classic with other Nokia. The T9 system board is still effective. The sending of MMS and email is of course quite possible on this model.

Like all non-Symbian Nokia lately, smileys are included in the mail.

Obviously you can associate a ringtone and a dedicated photo to a contact or a group.
Note that the photo displayed when a call is still small, especially compared to Sony Ericsson terminals.

Conclusion

This Nokia 5310, without being a monster performance, manages the paris to associate phones with dimensions contained a very high-performance audio player. Thanks to its affordability, the new entrant would certainly attract a lot of young consumers who want a device offering these aspects.

However, it is unfortunate that the camera have been forgotten, just as 3G connectivity. There are, however, the Nokia 5610 for example that removes these defects, but also propose a more imposing size.
