Nokia 6110 Navigator

The Nokia 6110 Navigator has a display 16 million colors, 240 x 320 pixels in dimensions of 101 x 49 x 20 mm and weighs 123 grams.
The Nokia 6110 Navigator has a camera, 2 megapixels, flash, 4x digital zoom, panorama mode. It also has bluetooth.
It has an internal memory of 40 MB and has a microSD card slot up \ to 2 GB The Nokia 6110 Navigator is compatible with WCDMA 2100 HSDPA and EDGE Quad-band (850-900-1800 -1900 MHz) .
It is available in stores since May 2007 at a price of 49 € (cons € 599).

Introduction Nokia 6110 Navigator

Second device with an integrated GPS receiver, the 6110 is, unlike the N95, which is oriented multimedia really meant to replace your GPS. Proposed in recent weeks in an approximate price of 449 € in Belgium. However, you only get the map of Benelux for the award. Comparatively, a stand-alone GPS mapping with full Europe costs between 200 and 250 € (and it is possible to find even cheaper).

Positive points:
- GPS application very accomplished
- Screen
- Very good finish
- UMTS + HSDPA
- Archive highly developed for Symbian S60
Contents of the box Nokia 6110 Navigator

Offered in two colors (black or white), the terminal is proposed in a classic white box, decorated with photos of the phone.

In unpacking the box we find:

- The 6110
- A Micro SD 512MB
- A USB cable
- Charger
- A stereo headset equipped with volume control buttons
- The various manuals and CDs

No accessories for mobile browsing so. We would still have hoped for a car charger or a support car series, but these items remain among the options in our country.
Design of the Nokia 6110 Navigator

The finish of the mobile is very correct, and this applies even for the sliding system, as described on the N95. The glossy black plastic is doing well, but quickly attract fingerprints, see the microphones scratching the Careless.

The keys are standard covering the device to a Symbian phone brand, with two exceptions:

- No dedicated button to power up or changing modes, all this will pass through the button "End Call".
- The navigation application has a dedicated key, which may seem logical given the orientation of the terminal.

At the back of the phone, the two speakers are immediately noticed, accompanied by the camera 2 mega pixels.

The keyboard has buttons of reasonable size, it will only require a small adjustment period as regards the three keys located just below the top of 6110 (keys 1-2-3).

The display features 16 million colors, a QVGA resolution (320 * 240 pixels), but we think the N95's screen offers a much better record despite having similar properties.

Using the Nokia 6110 Navigator

Once on standby, the interface looks strong enough to other models on Symbian S60.
We therefore find the reception level-network in the upper left, the battery level at the top right, the network name, time and date in the upper part.
Just below are 6 application shortcuts you can set or disable.
Still a level below we find the next appointment.

By cons it is, to my knowledge, not yet possible to add plug-in to display the weather or another, as suggested by Windows Mobile.

Two other shortcuts are also present through the validation keys left and right.

A short press the menu button will display it. You can view the menu as a list or icons. You can also arrange the order of menus and content files as you wish.
A long press will display the current program manager.

Menu of the Nokia 6110 Navigator

Originally, the menus are organized like this:

1) Messaging:

Here again nothing new. This menu contains your SMS, MMS and your various mailboxes you have configured. The memory used will depend on your preferences (internal memory or memory card). Smileys still not integrated into the software, too bad. Like some other S60 models of the brand, the 6110 can read his speech message through the support of a single key ('my own key, key configurable to serve as a shortcut to another application for example). Even if the result is far from a real person reading a text, this function might be useful for visually impaired or when driving for example.

2) Contacts

This is your telephone directory. The sorting is done, by choice, by name or surname. Creating and managing groups of contacts is possible.
Obviously you can associate a ringtone and a dedicated photo to a contact. Nothing new here then.

3) Journal

It's your call log, which references your dialed / received / missed as well as SMS and network connections (GPRS or 3G).

4) Parameters

This is where you configure many of the functions of your 6110, such as Internet accounts, the themes, the language of your phone, power the backlight of the screen ...
Connectivity (Bluetooth) will also be set in this submenu.

6) Multimedia

NOKIA 6110 NAVIGATOR - Photo 18

- Camera: The camera then the Nokia 6110 has not dazzled by the quality of his photographs. No development, whether manual, and a seemingly optical quality than average are the cause. The proposed settings are not many either.

Here are two examples of shots taken with the Nokia 6110:

Nokia 6110 Navigator - Nokia 6110 Navigator Photo 61 - Photo 62

- Radio: Like many Nokia, the 6110 integrates a stereo FM radio. This is the version "Visual Radio", which may, if desired, get data through the network such as GPRS/3G available stations. I personally have never used the "visual".
By cons it is a shame that Nokia still does not function on a mobile multimedia RDS this range, while Sony Ericsson has implemented this feature with his K750i, it has been almost 2 years. The sound quality and reception is average.
It is always necessary to connect a headset to use the radio (it will serve as an antenna), but listening through two speakers obviously poses no problems.
As for the music player, the current station will be indicated on the home screen.

- RealPlayer video player that comes with the Symbian S60 since their inception.

NOKIA 6110 NAVIGATOR - Menu 20

- Flash: Flash Player on your 6110

NOKIA 6110 NAVIGATOR - Menu 21

- Music player: Even if this app is correct, it is far from the music player the Nokia N95 or N73ME. The possibilities here are really lower.
The original headphones are higher quality than average, and will mostly use headset.
The sound is more impressive, however, without a helmet thanks to the excellent qulité loudspeakers built into the phone. So do not expect to use your 6110 as a true MP3 player, an N95 or N73ME be more suitable for such use.

- Voice: This voice recorder from 6110. In the settings you can choose the recording quality and file locations enregistrés.Les high quality voice memos are saved in wave (. Wav), another good point for interoperability.

7) Organizer

NOKIA 6110 NAVIGATOR - Menu 24

- Agenda: Nothing new here either. The display is possible for a month or week.
The appointment of the current day will be reported on the home screen, as proposed by smartphones and PDAs running Windows Mobile over the past few years.

NOKIA 6110 NAVIGATOR - Menu 25

- Notes: Software memo that has existed since the beginnings of the S60 OS. The notes are saved in text format (. Txt), which is a big plus for the exchange of notes between devices (all devices from all brands, or nearly all, are compatible. Txt).
The timing of notes is apparently possible via PC Suite.

NOKIA 6110 NAVIGATOR - Menu 26

- Calculator: Calculator (not scientific) classic

NOKIA 6110 NAVIGATOR - Menu 27

- Converter: Already for many years, this handy converter can convert various units (lengths, temperatures, surfaces, ...)

NOKIA 6110 NAVIGATOR - Menu 28

- Clock: Everything about the date and time is here, as setting the alarm, for example. We can manage several different alarms, alarm or not. It is also possible to add cities in the world to see the local time.

8) Web

WAP and Web sites are available on the browser.
The latter is based on the foundation of Apple's Safari browser.

When browsing a web page, you will see a page view, complete with a red square delimiting the sight of your screen relative to the current page. When returning to a previous page, thumbnails of the pages visited during the current session will be proposed to avoid a return on an unwanted page.

We are still far from what Apple has introduced with its iPhone, but this browser is already good enough for mobile use in my opinion. I do not stand by the fact that a laptop is always more fun to browse a mobile phone, regardless of the size of its screen or its embedded browser.

9) Gallery

I think it's a part of the S60 system that has evolved most recently.
You can consult all the media files in your N95, be it video, photos, pictures classics, songs (this will open the music player just described above).
The files are classified by type, but you can also consult together. The photo display is via a sort of carousel of thumbnail images. Given the size of the display of these photos is not really miniature flash unfortunately.

10) Download! :

This little program list by referencing software compatible with your Nokia 6110, whose software already included on your phone.
You can also download the example program for downloading podcasts developed by Nokia.
For some programs, you will be redirected to EA Games or Amazon. Station to the data plan though!

11) Applications:

NOKIA 6110 NAVIGATOR - Menu 33

Originally, this menu contains:

- Games: Snake and Marble are originally supplied.

NOKIA 6110 NAVIGATOR - Menu 34

- Custom: list of software you have installed.

- Adobe PDF: S60 version of the famous PDF reader.

- QuickOffice: Like most of its high-end models running Symbian S60, Nokia has built an office suite in 6110.
By cons, it is only possible to view documents without upgrading (and pay extra) software, too bad.
The software will automatically detect the documents in the memory of your 6110.

- Milestones: List your points of interest stored in your 6110.

- GPS data: you about the status of satellites acquired by 6110.

- Help: contains all the tricks using your 6110, a sort of mini-board user manual

The Navigator

Let's now up to the main application of the Nokia 6110: Nokia Navigator. Unlike the Nokia N95 and E90 equipped with the Nokia Maps solution house, the Finnish manufacturer has decided to develop a new navigation application based on Route 66.

As we already noticed in our first grip the phone last June, the sensitivity of the GPS chip is very good, even without A-GPS.
With less than a minute to be located on the map at the launch of the application.
To recap, briefly, the A-GPS will require the position of satellites around a server according to its geographical position, based on the GSM antenna to which it is connected. This allows a GPS fix much faster (seconds), but generates additional costs (a few KB for each request) from your operator. It should be noted that this feature is also present in recent versions of the N95 and E90.

In use, the software is very pleasant, although personally I think TomTom is more intuitive example. However, it is very easy to find a place (address, restaurant ...) and the guiding text and voice is very clear.

The navigation software will even be able to get the address of a contact in the directory, provided they have completed this field course.

Another pleasant surprise: the sound is powerful part of the dual speaker phone, which is obviously very interesting on this kind of products.

However I regret many things, including the fact that the 6110 does not come with a European, or that it is not even an option. You will indeed pay € 49 per additional country, making fast the high price tag for frequent travelers.

Conclusion

As usual with the brand, the level of reception and sound quality are very good, have no worries on that side.

Autonomy is also very correct:
count on 3-4 hours of use GPS with the backlighting of the screen on, and about 3 days use "classic", without too much mail or mobile surfing then.

Equipped with an extensive connection (it only lacks the wifi) and a GPS layer very convincingly, we think 6110 is a great choice for those not wishing to bother with a GPS.

However we regret that the multimedia terminal is set aside, and that mapping is only regional.

A car charger and a fastening system to the windshield come standard would have made us forget these few inconveniences.
