Presentation

Like the Nokia 5730 XpressMusic, his cousin more or less distant tested recently, the Nokia 5630 XpressMusic was announced in February 2009 and was released for sale from June 2009.
This too, as its name suggests, a mobile designed primarily for listening to music and is equipped with various functions for simplified reading of its audio on the move.
It differs, however, his cousin by its formfactor. Where was the 5730 XpressMusic mobile with a QWERTY keyboard in slide, the 5630 is a mobile piece design simple but effective. It is therefore a mobile entry with minimal functionality of a music phone.
However, do not prejudge and it is ultimately determined that the 5630 over the 5730 on many aspects.

Kit contents and accessories

The Nokia 5630 XpressMusic is sold in a cardboard box Nokia Classic.
Besides the phone, there are various accessories, all in all fairly conventional.
DVD-ROM, user manual, a black fabric pouch, a USB cable / USB microphone, a battery charger and a handsfree kit.

Let's look quickly at some of these elements. As with the 5730 XpressMusic, the USB cable is only 20 cm by counting from one end of a connection to another. Needless to say, is too low for a phone that is supposed to synchronize with a computer to transfer their music.

The hands free kit, meanwhile, is relatively conventional, Nokia. And that's a shame. Also in comparison with the 5730 XpressMusic, we find ourselves there with a Nokia Classic kit, in two parts. The one with headphones, connect to the other part consisting of the audio controller, microphone and button to answer a call. One regrets the absence of in-ear headphones that would have been entirely appropriate for a phone of this range.

However an attempt has been made about the battery charger. It is this time with a micro USB to limit the number of connections on the mobile, but most can be replaced with any charger that has the same connectivity, Nokia certified or not.

Finally, a 4-gigabyte microSD card also comes with music phone, where the Nokia 5730 XpressMusic was equipped with a 8GB card.

Design and finishes

Very different from 5730 in material terms, the 5630 XpressMusic is a mobile piece, that is to say he holds in one party, without valve or slide.
This impression of having a camera with a single, coherent block is reinforced by the materials used.
Indeed, the front of the mobile is covered with clear plastic and shiny where the buttons seem to come out. Thus, to the touch, distinguishes only the buttons on the mobile, all edges are perfectly integrated in a glossy smooth plate.

Rather light, the 5630 XpressMusic is especially fine and well designed. Like most mobile XpressMusic keys shortcut to the music application are located to the left of the screen. The top, meanwhile, is occupied by the port and standard 3.5mm jack the micro USB slot. Note also the originality of this choice as we usually find the USB connectors on the bottom or side bands. This choice is probably done to find all the connections on the same wafer.
Finally, on the right of the mobile, we find the traditional volume buttons, the trigger-function video camera and a microSD slot.
Just above the screen, a light sensor allows the phone to detect whether the camera on the back of the craft, requires the use of flash or the keys of the mobile need to be backlit. At his side, a secondary camera is available when using the video function.

The 2.2 inch screen, smaller than the 5730 XpressMusic, displays up to 16 million colors, which does not prevent it from having a slight inclination towards blue.

Getting Started

Taking Charge! This was indeed the biggest fault of the 5730 XpressMusic. As well tell you now, you go from rooster to donkey with 5630.
While the keys were 5730 rather difficult to access, whether on the QWERTY keyboard, shortcuts or music button on the camera, the 5730 XpressMusic is infinitely more pleasant to use.
However, the button on the camera, even if it requires more force to use, it is regrettable, however, its position, this time too close to the edge of the mobile. Between that of 5730, too far, and it, too close, we would have wished a happy medium.

The alphanumeric keypad is quite comfortable and we happen to type text messages without difficulty from the first grip of the device.
Finally, Symbian forces, we find the six menu keys. These are particularly neat and it is much easier to navigate menus with the N95, for example.

We particularly appreciate the overall grip of the phone. Very thin and long and narrow, the interface is really nice.
The compactness of the mobile device is both comfortable and discreet, unfortunately to the detriment of the screen whose size can be sometimes insufficient, particularly in the use of multimedia or web music phone.

In use

Like the Nokia 5730 XpressMusic, the 5630 is equipped with a version of Symbian S60 specially modified to appeal to young fans of social networks and mobile music.

Its interface is specially redesigned including the possibility, once the home page, create shortcuts to favorite contacts. With these shortcuts, you can access various information about his contacts as soon as including the latest SMS exchanged, displayed in a discussion, or more conventional information such as their photo or their email address.
In the homepage too, it is possible to customize shortcuts to 6 applications to access it more easily.

Symbian S60, the mobile is quite fast and really stable. No bug disturbs navigation, including multi-tasking situation, when multiple applications are running at the same time on the mobile.
Just like the 5730 XpressMusic, we also find an option in the menu display, allowing access only to the window of multitasking. Thus, no need to hold down the button Symbian as the choice is always at your fingertips.

The general interface of the mobile is designed in rather sober shades including showy and colorful icons on a black background relatively chic.

Autonomy announced standby is 408H and up to 4 hours in communication. Again, without going to calculate to the minute the duration of a cycle battery, it should be noted that mobile can be used easily by using it for 48 including 1 to 2 hours to call.

Multimedia

The Nokia 5630 XpressMusic is a music phone, cell phone whose main purpose, besides the phone, then, is listening to music on the move.

From the material point of view, this mobile XpressMusic range is seen with a standard 3.5 mm jack, allowing the user to connect any headphones, not only one offered with the phone .
Because yes, it will be difficult to simply headphones provided by the Finnish company as their quality is reviewed. It is a pity that the efforts made by Nokia in terms of accessories with the 5730 do not recur with the entry-level mobile XpressMusic.

Still on the hardware, we find the traditional buttons control the music player on the left edge of the mobile.
When the audio application is closed, simply pressing the buttons used to open it.
Then once open, just press it to control the music played, regardless of the window displayed on the screen. The pause, move to the next track, or return to the previous track.
A small window will then open to indicate the currently playing song and the current status of the player.

The sound quality is not bad. But far from being excellent. Let's say for a phone this compact format and also, we are pleasantly surprised by the result even if the sound from the speakers is sorely lacking bass.
With the supplied speaker, even if the bass is more present, we can only be disappointed with the overall quality.
Fortunately, the 3.5 mm jack allows to plug any headphones. And when we move to higher quality headphones, you may be pleasantly surprised. The sound is well made and all frequencies are heard.

Like the Nokia 5730 XpressMusic, we can access the portal for downloading music from the phone. In the menus of the music application, a link is available to directly access the mobile site's download portal, including the move.
Damage, however, that the mobile site is so unclear and so confused. Indeed we regret the lack of readability of the gate facing the iTunes Store competitor.

Being dedicated to multimedia, the Nokia 5630 XpressMusic can logically downloading and playing podcasts. It also has a database of podcasts available. However, it is thin and it will mostly go look up the address of the podcast you want to subscribe and enter them manually.
A further complication which surely will discourage those who want to try. Indeed, it must be remembered that the target audience for this mobile market is not necessarily a techie and a very streamlined approach to accessing podcasts have been preferable.

Equipped with an FM tuner, the music phone can also listen to his music. The quality is pretty good and the RDS feature allows you to view what is currently tuned radio.
However, as is often the case on mobile phones, we must plug a headset in order to use the FM radio feature, the latter serving as an antenna tuner. Therefore impossible to listen to his favorite radio stations via the loudspeaker.

Camera and video

The Nokia 5630 XpressMusic has obviously a photo-sensor video.
Limited to 3.2 megapixels and no autofocus, macro mode or sensor Carl Zeiss, one should not expect miracles.
Indeed, the picture quality is particularly disappointing.

However, we must not forget that this is an entry-level phone XpressMusic. The picture quality is so clearly not a priority for the target audience for the Nokia 5630 XpressMusic.
Besides the video-camera mode is not highlighted on the menu since moving in must be sought directly in the application page and no shortcut is available on the homepage or menu page.
However, the camera mode will suffice for those looking to take snapshots to freeze a memory on a microSD card.
The camera is also equipped with an LED flash and has a rather unique feature as it can take photos in panorama mode by chaining several shots, up to 360 °. Moreover, the pictures are taken automatically in this mode, the device identifying the shooting based on the previous shot.
Finally, the device also has a video function, pretty basic, but simple enough to use even basic.

The Nokia 5630 XpressMusic, just like its big brother, has a secondary sensor in front, next to the light sensor. Obviously, the quality is not to go but this is not the intention. It is always nice to have a second sensor to be able to shoot during a video conversation.

Features

In addition to his MP3 player, camera and FM radio, basic applications of 5630 are relatively limited. It does, indeed, no GPS chip allowing the use of a location application.
However these are the traditional calendar, alarm clock or organizer.
In addition, the opening of Symbian OS will install various applications that can be found on the portal including Ovi Nokia Store.
Unfortunately, again the comparison with the iPhone is inevitable and we regret the lack of applications available and the lack of usability of the portal.

Internet connectivity

The Nokia 5630, XpressMusic entry level, aims to be a smartphone. And he succeeds rather, especially in view of its high connectivity.
It is especially equipped with a WiFi chip compatible b / g, Bluetooth 2.0 and 3G + HSDPA chip allowing to access the web on the move via the built-in browser or via downloaded applications.
The default browser is also still very intuitive and the menus also impractical.
Note also the absence of GPS from the negative even if a mobile input range, this lack is not feeling too.

The mobile can be connected to a computer in two ways. Via Bluetooth or via a USB cable.
When connected via USB, the mobile offers a choice of options depending on the type of interaction is desired between two terminals, mass storage, PC Suite or modem mode.
Mass storage, as its name implies, allows you to use the phone memory to store various files. Modem allows the user to use mobile networks to connect his computer to the web. This mode is of great interest in the move.

The optional PC Suite, meanwhile, needs to install the software on his eponymous computer. This mode allows you to directly manage their mobile from their computer.
Thus, the software offers the possibility to transfer files, write text messages or manage their contacts or calendar, all directly from the dedicated software.

Conclusion

The Nokia 5630 XpressMusic, sold around 200 euros, ranks as an entry to the XpressMusic phones, while its cousin, the 5730 Xpress Music, averaging 280 euros clearly wants more complete.
Yet, while on paper as on the invoice, this hierarchy is correct, the user experience will clearly benefit the 5630 XpressMusic.
Indeed, it has no faults of his cousin, who was leaving on a good foundation though.

Farewell design flaws such as ergonomics or completely revise the outlet owners.
Here we have a phone with a much better formfactor, not suffering from any criticism, and very nice grip.

However, the lack of features the highly developed confined to the target to which it is designed: a young audience foremost proponent of music that does not necessarily look in his mobile terminal allowing him to write his emails, or watch his videos.

Positives:
The chic and classic design
A very compact
Ergonomics faultless
Favorite contacts as homepage
Good sound quality Minus points:
Symbian aging
Still few applications on Ovi Store
Photo-video mode to improve
Screen too small
