Sony Ericsson W580i

The Sony Ericsson W580i phone is a slim phone dedicated to music that provides listening comfort characteristic of Walkman phones. It stores up to 470 songs, features a 2 megapixel camera and a multitude of functions for games and recreation.

Available in white gray, The Walkman quad-band EDGE attract attention with its shades of orange or blue and light effects on the sides.

Transfer music tracks from your computer is very simple with the Disc2Phone software and USB cable supplied as standard. You can even use TrackID to identify songs you do not recognize that you are trying to read or listen to them on the phone's RDS FM radio.

With the W580, you can even listen your favorite music while doing your jog. It counts your steps and calories burned while remembering your running speed, distance traveled and the duration of your course.

ASPECT ET DESIGN

After a very fine piece W880i, Sony Ericsson is back with the W580i, just as slim as its predecessor. Of course, being a slider (slider), the set is logically a bit thicker, but this is more than correct with just 14mm thick. Its design is attractive in every way, especially in its white, enhanced here and there an orange look great.

The grip appears to be very good, despite the small size of the phone. His lower back, slightly curved, there is probably not unrelated.

The display was excellent, both sharp and bright. Although not very large, two inches can take advantage of different applications and play on it fairly comfortable.

Just below the screen, we found the keypad that allows you to navigate the phone. This block contains seven buttons plus the directional pad.

The function of the top button on the left, as the right one, is variable as they are and adapt to contextual menu where you are. One is generally used to validate and the other to cancel. They are configured on the Home screen, allowing you to create shortcuts to your favorite features. Just below the left, the curved arrow button is the one that lets go back through the menus or when browsing the Wap. A long press on it and you find yourself on the homepage of the phone. On the right, middle button is the famous "c" (clear) who needs no introduction. It erases letters in a text message, delete a program, etc.. But, whether right or left, the top buttons are glued to each other, which makes manipulation difficult sometimes for those who have large hands.

The directional pad is on the other hand a model of its kind, both aesthetically and from an ergonomic perspective. It perfectly meets the demands. But again, it might cause some small problems to those who have large paws. Not insurmountable, however. Below these buttons are located on the right a button that displays a menu handy pool core functions, open applications, etc.. On the left, this is a shortcut to the Walkman function on which we focus below.

The whole is generally well thought out and ergonomically, especially given the reduced area available to the manufacturer. Note that the speaker of the mobile is in the middle of the directional pad, perfectly concealed.

In addition to its pleasant design, this phone is also distinguished from the competition with the colored LEDs on the sides that trigger some nice lighting effects when you open or close it by example. Are you sure you do not go unnoticed with this phone in nightclub!

But this phone is not there to show off, far from it. The plastics used are solid, pleasant to the touch and provide excellent grip of the phone
By cons, if you are among those who juggle multiple SIM cards, the beginning with the W580i may be difficult. Why? The location to insert the card is ... evil!

In fact, we must have very fingers (but then very) fine to slide the card through and activate the mechanism which holds it. In practice, it is almost mission impossible without a small object to help you. Fortunately, the back cover of the battery is just fine. The same goes for the memory card. If we can only congratulate the manufacturer not to have hidden under the shell, the extract is however just as bad as the SIM card.

Its location is situated high on the edge of the phone next to the button that allows you to turn on the phone. And the least we can say is that the W580 does not flourish in the next side keys. With the exception of the power button, which also allows you to select a mode, we find that the classical dual key "+ / -" on the left flank. For the rest, the jack plug or the charger or the headset is on the right side of the phone.

Finally, a word on the back of the mobile. This provides a uniform alphanumeric keyboard is retracted. The slide unveils digital camera onboard two megapixels. The goal is always well protected in the bag or pockets of users.

MP3 PLAYER

It probably will not teach you anything by saying that the function of the mobile flagship of the range "Walkman" is music. And this is not the W580 is going to tarnish that reputation as it excels in this area.

If the sound is just average with the top speaker in the middle of the directional buttons, it takes an entirely different dimension when it puts superb ear-ocular provided with the phone. For those unaware, these are headphones with a malleable tip that enters the ear, greatly reducing any external noise.

The record is excellent, the sound becoming so powerful and crystalline. And if for some reason or another, these headphones do not suit you, you can always make your own. The phone is indeed comes with a headset that also acts as a jack adapter.

Let us now look at the function "Walkman" itself. Accessible from a shortcut key on the front of the phone or from the menu, it shows no major change over previous mobile range. We find all the functions of an MP3 player classic as "advance", "return", "previous / next", etc.. Sony Ericsson has also thought to provide an original function: "Shake It". It is in fact sufficient to hold the Walkman shortcut button and shake the phone to change songs randomly.

Certainly nice, but rather anecdotal. For cons, the TrackID feature is far more useful. It allows the phone to identify a song you do not recognize. If the value of such a system may seem dubious to your own MP3's, know that the W580 offers an RDS radio onboard. The TrackID feature makes a lot of sense since you can find the name of a song that you are taking over!

As mentioned in the preamble, the mobile comes with a 512MB memory card, preloaded with Soundz of Freedom, the latest album by Bob Sinclar. Such a capacity to store between 400 and 500 titles, depending on how you encode your MP3s. In short, you'll have plenty to do. And if that's not enough, the prices of memory cards has dropped drastically these days and you should be in tracking down one of two gigabytes for twenty euros.

Finally, a good music-phone, the W580i is also compatible with Bluetooth 2.0 (A2DP). So you can connect a compatible wireless stereo headset very easily.

OTHER FEATURES: PHOTO, VIDEO ...

Despite its motto "to each his mobile usage" and except for the W950i, Sony Ericsson has taken the habit of equipping its mobile "Walkman" digital cameras. Of course they are lower quality than those that fit the range of Cybershot mobile (K750i, K800, K810, etc.).. That of the W580i is hidden behind the front of the phone. It is protected when the alphanumeric keyboard is not extended.

With two megapixels, it takes pictures very correct, at least outdoors. Indoors, it's a different story, especially if the light is low. And do not count on the flash for you save the day in darkness ... there is none!

The overall picture remains the function really limited: no picture rotation (sic), no macro mode, etc.. But this weakness is not really in that Sony Ericsson does not deceive you the goods.

Here is music that is paramount! We note nevertheless the presence of several multimedia applications that allow rework photos, videos and songs. If VideoDJ is pretty basic, PhotoDJ proves a little more complete. The first city does "only" add text to videos and cut them while the second offers the possibility to rework his photographs (color, contrast, effects, etc.)..

From the home page of the phone, we note at the bottom left ... a step counter! The manufacturer has equipped its new kid on the effect of another nice feature: Fitness. Once activated, it provides access to extensive information such as your running speed, the number of steps taken in the day, calories burned, duration of a course, etc.. Such application is really ideal for jogging enthusiasts, especially since it is really customizable and really proves accurate to use. For others, you can still have fun counting the number of steps separating two bus stations or subway ...

IN CONCLUSION

Finally, Sony Ericsson makes an almost perfect copy with the W580i. Failing to innovate so outrageous the manufacturer based on solid achievements to provide a near-perfect phone. Only two points tarnish (a little) cash. First, the autonomy that is proving rather average. Heavy use (MP3 player + phone), you must remember to recharge every night. It's not really surprising given the reduced thickness of the phone. Then, the mobile is only compatible with GPRS and Edge and ignores the 3G and 3G +.

If these two points are not prohibitive for you, we warmly recommend it. You can absolutely replace your MP3 player and it also easily supports the comparison with most of those present on the market in terms of sound reproduction. Forms slender and beautiful design will easily find their way deep in your pocket. Especially it has in the stomach and turns in stride the latest Java games and applications.
