Philips 639

With the 639, Philips showed a touch of innovation rarely seen in its range. With its clamshell design and sleek look, this new terminal creates the surprise with its external OLED screen hidden behind a mirror.

OLED and effect "magic mirror"
The latest Philips introduces many innovations compared to 630 released a year earlier, starting with the design. The 639 is closer to 330 in design (keyboard) and the 630 in features (color display ...). But still a difference: the external OLED screen.

The 639 is just the first terminal to be Philips has such a screen. The manufacturer's designers may have wanted to play the card of innovation by coupling the OLED screen with an upper shell being truly as a mirror. So, rarely screen was also well integrated, and the display screen placed under the mirror makes the terminal very high tech.

To impress your friends, Philips has integrated 5 animations on the OLED display featuring animals with a warm sound quality. An animated clock is also present and you alarm every 15, 30 or 60 minutes using animation (monk, chicken, Buddhist temple, cuckoo clock).

Once the valve open, there is a fully functional keypad with 2 keys, direct access to MMS and BeDJ. The screen on it deserved to be bigger, especially as there are plenty! So we are left with the screen 535 can display 65,536 colors (128x128 pixels - 27 * 27 mm). Besides the graphical environment is identical to the 530/535 with the same color codes and interface 'carousel':
• Settings: sounds, display, voice commands, voice dialing, date, language, profiles ...
• Messages: SMS management, MMS, e-mail
• Multimedia: album music and images, camera, BeDJ, state memory, recordings
• Games and Applications: breakout, converter, calculator, alarm clock, organizer
• Call: call list, setting the call counters
• Directory: Contact Management
• Operator Services: WAP access and services of your operator.

The menu 639 is identical to the 535 but with no menu and Infrared Camera.

GPRS, MMS and BeDJ
The Philips 639 is a dual band phone that integrates the renowned music publisher already present on the 530/535 models of the manufacturer. BeDJ lets you create and save your creations made from pieces and sounds recorded in the phone or by downloading new samples on the Internet. A small tracker actually, but still capable of handling 9 tracks.

The terminal includes of course all the usual functions: WAP / GPRS Class 10, vibrator, SMS / EMS / MMS, T9, 32 polyphonic ring tones, voice recognition and voice commands, voice memo, an internal phone book of 300 contacts, alarm , calculator, converter, e-mail client ... Also note the presence of the function Fotocall that identifies incoming calls through one of the photos you have saved.
However, the phone is not hands-free, and does not include the FM radio yet present on the 630.
Similarly, it does not include the Java function, but the engine of In-Fusio, which will also allow you to download new games. There are 2 In-Fusio games embedded in the terminal and a 'breakout'.

In terms of memory, the phone offers 2 MB which is plenty if you do not acquire the camera module accessory. FYI, the memory should still allow you to save fifty photos in VGA format, which is not bad.

Finally, regarding connectivity, we must admit that this is not the strong point of 639 which has no IR port and that the packaging does not, unfortunately, data cable. It is optional (Ref: AGHOBG/Z1T) and the camera module (Ref: A3VVBD/01T).

First look and first surprise. The Philips 639 has not gone unnoticed with its OLED display and the famous mirror, but what a pity that the internal screen is too small! The technological content is satisfactory given the market and the target specified. In addition, budding photographers can add the optional camera. Cheese :-)
