APPEARANCE AND DESIGN
The design of the Qtek 8310 is a success. Its black on the front and gray on the sides and rear give a special touch to this smartphone. If it does not compete with the latest ultra flat terminals, it benefits from a reasonable size and it is very easy to use. The result is very pleasing. The keys are wide enough and perfectly meet the orders. The navigation joystick is sturdy and precise.

Front, the 8310 provides a screen displaying 65,536 colors effective resolution of 240 x 320 pixels (QVGA). The dimensions of the screen reaches 34 * 45 mm and a diagonal of 57 mm. Nothing to say, the screen will display lots of information and offer you excellent visibility. Located just below the screen, there are 4 buttons: 2 buttons' function ', a key host' and a button 'Back'. Regulars of Windows Mobile will be at ease.

The keyboard is successful. The keys are easily accessible and do not slip. In addition to alphanumeric keys, and keys 'win' / 'hang up', there are two dedicated buttons for functions 'directory' and 'messages'.

The left side edge hosts a dedicated button to the manager of communication (WiFi, Bluetooth), which will also record a voice note with a long press. Moreover, this installment welcomes two buttons for volume control.

As for the right lateral edge, there is a button for direct access to photo mode and a slot for attaching a neck.

The photo sensor is located on the back cover with a mirror for self portraits. It does not have a cover to protect it. So take it in the utmost care! Also note the lack of flash.

The top features the power button (which requires some tact), the speaker and the infrared port. Note the presence of two LEDs on each side of the speaker: an LED network and another blue when Bluetooth is activated.

Finally we find the headphone jack and dock connector (Mini USB format) on the bottom. The location of the SIM card is located under the battery. You probably will experience some difficulties in choosing the back cover. Too bad the system adopted is not that of the Qtek 9100 or just push a little button that opens the hood.

But where is the reader miniSD? Well aware that it is under the battery. It is far easier access as the Sagem myS-7 (available on the drive side of the unit).
DESCRIPTION OF THE MENU
The Qtek 8310 is one of the first smartphones running Windows Mobile 5.0. The opportunity to evaluate the performance of this new version by comparing it to my old Sagem myS-7. The start of Qtek done in 35 seconds while Sagem is 50 seconds. Even better! Qtek extinguished in 5 seconds against 30 seconds for the Sagem.

The homepage does not vary greatly from one version to another. We find the last used functions at the top of the screen, then the network information, calendar, missed calls, the number of SMS / MMS received. The button "Start" and "Contacts" at the bottom of the screen are also by appointment. The only "big" difference is of course the quality offered by the Qtek screen brightness, color fidelity, resolution ... offer real comfort and a pleasure for the eyes.

To access the main menu, use the "Start" button. The Sagem Windows Mobile 2003 provided an overview of various functions in a list, while the functions are now presented as icons, like on most phones. The first page displays 3 * 3 icons. The user must press the "More" to access other features.

Here is a list of original features that you find on the Qtek 8310:
- Internet Explorer
- Windows Media
- Active Sync
- Comm Manager (Bluetooth, WiFi ...)
- Pocket MSN

You will be able to add many applications thereafter. You must ensure that the software is highly compatible with this new version of Windows Mobile.

You can use ActiveSync to synchronize information such as Outlook mail, contacts, calendar, tasks and multimedia content (music, video and images) or any other file. Synchronization is also possible via infrared or Bluetooth connection.

Communication Manager allows you to easily enable or disable phone features:

The Bluetooth connection was tested with a Jabra JX10 with no difficulty on the pairing and voice communications.

Your phone can be configured to receive e-mails from Outlook e-mail accounts, Hotmail, POP3 and IMAP4. Being a major user of SMS, I note that Windows Mobile 2005 can now set a time for receiving any acknowledgments (SMS> Menu> Options> Account Options> SMS> Receive) while he was apply to each SMS in Windows Mobile 2003 (SMS> New> Menu> Message Options> Request a notification when the message delivery).

Your phone comes with Internet Explorer Mobile is a full Internet browser. By cons, still no support for Flash animations. Note the presence of Pocket MSN, which includes: MSN Messenger, MSN Hotmail, MSN Hotmail Message MSN Mobile Home.

Use Calendar to schedule appointments, including meetings and other events. Your appointments for the day can be displayed on the homepage. If you use Outlook on your PC, you can synchronize appointments between your phone and your PC. You can also set the calendar to remind you of appointments by a sound or a flashing light.

Contacts is your address book and your data storage. Store phone numbers, addresses, IM, Web pages, e-mail, position, company and any other information such as birthday or anniversary. You can also add a picture or assign a ring tone to a contact. You can also add a picture or assign a ring tone to a contact. The new provision in the records now show that the photo of your contact, so that was not previously the case (it should go to another function 'Photo ID').

Use Tasks to keep track of things you should do. A task can occur once or repeatedly. You can set reminders for your tasks and you can organize them using categories. Overdue tasks are displayed in red.

Use notes to create short voice recordings.

You can use Windows Media to play audio and video stored on your phone. Here are the supported files:
Video: wmv, asf, mp4, 3gp, avi
Audio: wma, mp3, mid, midi, mid, amr, awb, m4a.

Windows games are of course to rendezvous with Bubble Breaker and Solitaire.
1.3 megapixel camera
The 8310 is the first mobile phone Qtek be equipped with a 1.3 megapixel camera. This will make it possible to take pictures with a resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels. This will allow you to print your photos on the format 10 * 15 cm. The sensor, located on the back of the phone comes with a mini mirror but no flash. Similarly, no "cache" is present to protect the sensor.

The digital camera has 4 image formats:
- 1280 * 1024 (1.3 megapixels)
- 640 * 480 (300,000 pixels)
- 320 * 240
- 120 * 160

To access the camera mode, simply press the speed dial button located on the right side edge. The screen displays the shot with some information such as: fashion (photo, video ...), the current resolution, the number of photos it is still possible to save and zoom level (up to x2 High-resolution). The key is on the screen and the user can easily find all the necessary options.

Here are the choices available to the settings menu:
- Capture modes: Photo - Video - Video MMS - Photo Contacts - Theme Image
- Zoom
- Atmosphere: Auto - Daylight - Incandescent - Fluorescent - Night - Grayscale - Sepia - Cool

Everything is very customizable: the storage location (internal memory or memory card), the ability to display the image after capture, mute button, the JPEG quality (Basic, Normal, Fine or Super Fine), the implementation of the timestamp when capturing ...

You can then take the picture by pressing the joystick or via the button on the left side edge.

Once the saved photo, you can send it via IrDA (infrared), e-mail or ActiveSync. You can also assign a photo to a contact in your phonebook. The Qtek 8310 includes a mini editor that lets you edit photos by rotating, cropping or choosing the 'AutoCorrect'. Only drawback, you can not add frames to your photos or drawings or special characters.

As we saw earlier, the 8310 has no flash for night shots, but a night mode that will not take pictures when the night is total, but is effective in urban areas (in the presence of street lights).

The memory of 8310 will allow you to save a large number of photos. With its miniSD reader, you will be able to save photos on memory cards. Numerous enough to fill your photo albums and use them as wallpaper, screen saver, or to associate them with contacts in your phonebook for caller identification of a single glance (PhotoCall function) as shown the photo below.

As you can see the contact picture is really small, so it seemed almost in full screen on the Sagem myS-7 with Windows Mobile 2003. Bad point!

The tests show a good rendering of images on the phone screen. For cons, the picture quality when transmitted over the PC is pretty average. The contours are far from precise and photos are terribly missing finesse. The manufacturer has much work to provide the level of rendering images.

The 8310 also has a video function that incorporates most of the available settings for the camera. Among the specifics, we discussed the possibility to choose the encoder. Very good idea from Qtek leaving the choice of video format to the user: MPEG-4, Motion JPEG AVI or H .263.

- Video 1 (rotation on the Champs Elysees)
- Video 2 (meeting with ducks)

Two resolutions are possible: 176 * 144 or 128 * 96 pixels. The menu also can limit the recording (by length or by weight). The videos produced are in the middle of videos made from other phones, but the resolution remains low.
IN CONCLUSION
The Qtek 8310 is definitely the much awaited smartphone. Firstly because its design is successful and it includes a QVGA display with dimensions particularly friendly with a great comfort. Then, the new version of Windows Mobile 5.0 brings stamped features found avancées.On course ActiveSync, Internet Explorer or Windows Media Player as well as handy functions such as the Comm Manager or the Task Manager that lets you know quickly the occupation of the memory space.

Another highlight of the Qtek 8310: connectivity. You can use infrared, Bluetooth, WiFi, a USB cable or miniSD memory cards. Thanks to the USB cable and ActiveSync, you will be able to exchange data with your PC and synchronize all your information.

This phone is used with great fun and it goes very quickly essential. No obvious slowdown noted, the Texas Instruments OMAP 850 processor running at 200 MHz (195 MHz after Windows Mobile> Settings> About!) Plays its role. Note that its autonomy in common use (mainly phone) was very good. Of course not everything is rosy. Most techies probably regret that the smartphone is not compatible with the 3G network. Others regret the quality of the camera that leveled off at 1.3 megapixels with no flash while the first 3.2 megapixel already arrived.
