Sony Ericsson Satio

Unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona 2009, the Sony Ericsson Satio (ex-Idu) is a Symbian smartphone with a 12 megapixel camera. The photo sensor is coupled to a Xenon flash, auto-focus, a smile of recognition system and a stabilizer.

The Sony Ericsson Satio has a TFT display, 3.5-inch display in 16:9 (640 x 360). The handset comes with a memory card 8 GB touch user interface makes navigation intuitive really - whether you're browsing the multimedia menu, adjust the settings of your camera or listen to music.

Satio the built-in aGPS. Location-based services like Google Maps and Wayfinder help you find your way to your destination. You can also add location info to your photos with geo-tagging function.
Time apathetic segment of smartphones touch, Sony Ericsson out the big guns with this Satio. It is the first mobile to offer a 12-megapixel photo sensor!

With this Satio, Sony Ericsson seems determined to kill two birds with one stone. On the one hand, the manufacturer makes a comeback in the smartphone segment touch. And the other, he resumed his place atop the hierarchy of camera phones manufacturers. To successfully meet the challenge, the manufacturer has the means to satisfy his ambitions.

The first thing that strikes at the sight of Satio is its large 3.5 inch screen capable of displaying 16 million colors at a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels. The other undisputed highlight of the camera sensor is its 12-megapixel autofocus camera, assisted by a xenon flash. The latter is also able to shoot video in VGA resolution (640 x 480 pixels). As often with this kind of high-end device, the connectivity is correct, the Satio become compatible with all current technology such as 3G + (HSDPA 7.2 Mbps and 3.6 Mbps HSUPA), Wi-Fi GPS, Bluetooth 2.0 stereo (A2DP).

To animate the whole, the manufacturer has opted for an ARM Cortex-A8 clocked at 600 MHz. It even includes a processor dedicated graphics chip, the PowerVR SGX graphics accelerator Dedicated, and 256 MB of RAM, ie memory for the smartphone. Finally, the conductor is none other than the operating system from Nokia for its tactile, namely S60 v5. This OS is based on a core Symbian 9.4. Sony Ericsson did not see fit to put a battery of more than 1000 mAh. It offers 360h standby and talk time 4:30.

Sony Ericsson proposes what it takes to get started with mobile phone. Note that the manufacturer is quite generous
on memory as still provides a microSD memory card 8 GB This kind of initiative is increasingly common for high-end phones. And always appreciated!
Appearance and Design

The Satio plays Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in terms of design. Its front is pretty standard. It offers a large touch screen, which leaves little time to the builder to innovate. Mean by that that the display occupies most of the front and it is actually quite difficult for the phone to differentiate themselves from others by this bias. Fortunately, Sony Ericsson still has more than one ace up its sleeve when it comes to design.

That's less true for the red version of the product. It was around that she'll have you turn if you want a phone that takes a bit unconventional. The problem is that this color may be a bit too feminine for many male users. For those, it will instead turn to the black or gray, the other two colors in which the Satio is available. In these colors, the mobile is certainly more common, less recognizable. But also more sober and discreet.

As mentioned above, the display occupies most of the front. Found still three buttons just below the display. One is to win, the other to hang up and the last to go back through the menus. The rear is rather more original. When we saw the phone back, it can be easily confused with a digital camera because of the sliding lens cover.

Materials side, Sony Ericsson has accustomed us to the plastic a little more noble for its high-end mobile. Those used for the hull of Satio are well made, but we can not find the same quality as with the C905 from the same manufacturer, for example. The touchscreen smartphone still quite pleasant to take charge. Again, the back stands out because the lens cap thick enough it emerges a real sense of quality and robustness.

The sides of the camera literally swarm of buttons and connectors, as there are pell-mell volume controls, a key to lock / unlock the connector for the headphones, the microSD slot and a button to turn on and off the phone. And that's not all: the picture is especially honored and several buttons dedicated to him. Besides the classic button to trigger the capture of a photo, Satio also offers a physical button to switch to capture video and another for access to photos and videos stored on the smartphone.

OS & Ergonomics

Sony Ericsson is known for ergonomics often close to the perfection of its products. One realizes after a few moments with this Satio that no exception to the rule. The physical buttons are all correctly located and the side button serves to lock / unlock the device falls well under the finger and offers no particular resistance.

The touch screen is resistive, ie you can also use it with a stylus. This type of display is deemed to be less accurate and less sensitive than the so-called capacitive screens. While we can not compare in terms of responsiveness and sensitivity of this screen Satio with the iPhone or HTC Hero, it is still sufficiently alert to be quite enjoyable to practice every day.

When the screen lights up, the operating system S60 v5 that we discover. It's the same OS that runs Nokia smartphones touch. Sony Ericsson has obviously not taken verbatim from the operating system rival. No, the Japanese-Swedish manufacturer has added a user interface of its own. In fact, if you do not know in advance what OS is running on the mobile, it is quite difficult to guess at first glance as the interface in question is different in centers that are found on Nokia. It consists of a system of tabs on the home page. This interface has proven to be both a pleasant looking, sober and very responsive. These tabs provide access to favorite contacts, shortcuts to favorite websites, a classic homepage, a photo gallery and even customizable shortcuts to applications. We especially liked the tab that contains the latest photos. This modern user interface also offers good views of some animations that give life to all.

But after this beautiful home, we fall back on the menu a bit sad and fixed the OS S60 v5. Navigation through the menus is generally quite smooth and relatively fast, however, there are much better on the market today. This is particularly surprising that the smartphone from Sony Ericsson embeds still a processor ARM Cortex A8 clocked at 600 Mhz. Same as the iPhone 3G or the Samsung HD Player. For reactivity within these two mobiles.
Functions Multimedia (Camera / Video)

Although there are now at least five mobile equipped with a 12-megapixel sensor over the world, Satio remains unique in offering such a sensor in France. A real piece of bravery so. But like digital cameras, the outbidding of megapixels has never guaranteed the quality of photos. Better to have a fairly low resolution and a good sensor than the reverse. Rest assured, the Satio offers both! He immediately arises as a worthy successor to the Sony Ericsson C905!

The quality of images captured is just bluffing for a mobile phone! The colors are beautifully rendered and the contrast and saturation are rarely caught out. The detail is excellent, sharp edges and precise. Under these conditions, you can take pictures with a maximum resolution of 4000 x 3000 pixels and consider extending these photos up to 40 x 50 cm with a very good quality!

Xenon flash requires the Satio behaves better than many of its competitors in terms of taking photographs in dark environment. However, without being catastrophic, the power of this flash is a bit disappointing. We must therefore ensure that the subject of your photo is not too far if you want it to be within the scope of the flash.

The interface of the photo function is not unlike that of a conventional camera as she is full of options and possibilities. It provides shortcuts to direct the scene modes, flash settings, those of exposure, etc. ... The smartphone will also adjust the white balance, to manage the effects, image stabilization or not ... As mentioned earlier, has a Satio active cache that allows you to enable and disable the function when the camera is slid. The presence of a GPS chip also offers the possibility of géotagguer the pictures taken. When you are in "Touch Capture", simply touch the screen with your finger to a focus on a particular point.

So the Satio can replace a compact camera? Yes, if you zoom the matter. Indeed, one of Satio is not only digital and optical, so, when a bigger picture, you lose definition when it is not the case with a true optical zoom.

Finally, let's finish this round of imaging capabilities of your smartphone with video. The Satio is able to shoot in 640 x 480 pixels. If this resolution has become almost standard among other manufacturers of equipment for medium and high-end, the Satio is only the second Sony Ericsson to offer such a resolution capture after the Xperia X1. For once, the manufacturer has not done things by half because these videos are captured at 30 frames per second. Beyond the numbers, they provide a very good record, especially in terms of fluidity of the animation and the level of important detail transcribed. So good job!

Other functions (internet, MP3 player, WiFi, Bluetooth ...)

If this smartphone is an extraordinary talent for capturing photos and videos, play multimedia content is however a little less polished. The music player "Walkman" is not an issue. Although most conventional, it offers almost all the options that you are entitled to expect from such a device with the ability to create playlists, play songs in different modes, etc.. .. Equalizers, however, lack the appeal and it is not possible to customize just listening to music. This is particularly unfortunate that the sound is really excellent.

Too bad also that the mobile does not offer 3.5 mm jack. This is all the more regrettable that the kit provided wired hands-free does not leave a lasting memory. We regret that it is made of one piece, ie without an adapter jack 3.5 mm. In sum, for listening to music in stereo with a good helmet, you're forced to a stereo Bluetooth headset quite expensive and rarely as good as a wired stereo headset excellent.

Another crushing disappointment: the video player. If the ergonomics of the latter does lend itself open to criticism, it is quickly limited by the small size with which it is compatible. Especially, Sony Ericsson did not see fit to license DivX. In fact, despite the power of the machine and the gorgeous screen, you must feed reader Satio video with clips to MP4 or 3GP formats. And then go through the long and tedious box encoding.

So you can easily put your media into the phone, Sony Ericsson has made an effort to offer a microSD memory card slot, instead of the usual port Memory Stock Micro M2. The microSD are more common and usually cheaper than the M2.

The smartphone's Web browser is almost the same as that found in Nokia's touch. It is generally quite functional but still suffers from some flaws that become annoying over time. For example, go into the menu to go full screen then it would have been easier to provide a shortcut. In contrast, this browser is particularly powerful in terms of compatibility since proved compatible with Flash and Java web languages. However, a ride on a site like YouTube will teach you that his memory is not infinite. The smartphone will display warning messages regularly.

You'll understand that this test by browsing the Satio is the best cameraphone you can find at the moment. Beyond megapixels, it offers a fairly clear picture quality superior to all other phones on the market. But reduce it to that sole function would be a grave injustice. For the Satio is a full-fledged smartphone. It loads the same OS as the Nokia touchscreen, the OS S60 v5. The Japanese-Swedish manufacturer has still added a user interface of its own which makes the screen almost unrecognizable host OS ... for the best! However, once in the intricacies of this system, we fall back into the menus ugly, lifeless but sufficiently clear and functional so that we forgive them their questionable aesthetics. The OS runs well but we expected a real thunderbolt of war in terms of responsiveness. Side design, Satio stands largely through its back that looks just like a digital camera. If you do not go unnoticed, choose the red version!

For the rest, the motive is not very fine but it's the price to pay to enjoy a quality photo sensor. Finally, autonomy is correct for this type of product with nearly two days on average use. Please note, however, if you take lots of pictures with flash, self melting like snow in sunshine. In terms of conversations, the sound quality of our product testing we felt good. In the end, we highly recommend this Satio if the photo is part of your priorities. For other features, this smartphone does not demerit but is better than him.
