LG Viewty Smart GC900

LG introduces the Viewty Smart (GC900), true successor of Viewty (KU990), the camera phone which LG should soon announce a record one million copies sold on the French market!

The Viewty Smart has many assets: 3-inch touchscreen interface, S-Class with 3D effects and transparency, 8 Megapixel Camera with shooting and intelligent face detection, and compatibility with 3G + / HSDPA 7.2. The memory is also consistent with the ability to reach 32 GB with microSD memory card reader!

The LG Viewty Smart GC900 is no doubt one of the biggest launches of the year for the Korean automaker. This new product would succeed the absolute bestseller of the brand, no less!

The mission of LG Viewty Smart does not look easy. The newcomer must indeed follow in the footsteps of the Viewty's first name. Released in late 2007 they made a big hit in terms of sales, peaking at over 7 million units sold. He was particularly captivated audiences since found a hexagonal million French buyers. A real bestseller so. LG has put the dishes in the large for us to propose a phone capable of achieving the same kind of sales performance.

This course begins with a perfect sheet. And on this side, the Smart Viewty does not disappoint. Like its predecessor, this mobile is intended primarily to multimedia use. It features a 8 megapixel sensor autofocus Schneider-Kreuznach certified, able to shoot in a very fine resolution of 720 x 480 pixels, 30 frames per second. Photos and videos produced by the moving appear on the touchscreen 3-inch (7.62cm) qualified by the manufacturer and multipoint features a WVGA resolution of 480x800 pixels and 16M colors displayed.

He reads the music files of course the most common, which is not necessarily the case for video as we see later. The mobile comes in two colors, sporting a black or gray shell. It is difficult to find fault in connectivity, will become compatible with all technologies of the moment as HSDPA 7.2 Mbps (3G +), Edge, Bluetooth 2.1 and stereo profile A2DP, Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g and even assisted GPS (AGPS). Side storage, 1.5 GB Viewty Smart embarks Although it does not compete with the heavyweights of the genre and their 16 to 32 GB on board, it remains honest view of what is proposed by most other phones. If you feel cramped, nothing prevents you to increase storage capacity via a microSD card. Everything is driven by a proprietary operating system on which LG has added its new user interface S-Class 3D.

Appearance and Design

LG is all business when it comes to design. Even if the manufacturer has not always lived up technologically in the past, it is generally known to give a touch of style quite particular to its phones. We think including Chocolate, Shine or the Secret. Korean has not lost his good habits as it flew touch with the Prada, the Prada II, the Renoir, the Arena, and now the Viewty Smart.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate a mobile from another first glance both large touchscreens occupy space on the front. LG comes out again with honors with this new model. It looks good to him, either in its gray or black version.

They have to face two silver bars rather aesthetic. The mobile is also unique in its front face which provides a dynamic impression with its top and bottom slightly beveled. And this is not the thickness that spoils the table with only 12.4 mm.

The rear looks very much like to that of a digital camera, thanks to the hard chrome around the lens. The plastics used are of good quality and everything is perfectly assembled. The finishes are also impeccable and the mobile is at once pleasant to take charge.

The keys are not many but on the sides of the device. Besides the button to turn it on and lock / unlock the screen on the upper portion, there is the traditional double the volume button on the right flank, just below the headphone connector / sector. Again, no 3.5mm jack. Not only will you not be able to connect your favorite headphones directly on the mobile, but it will also choose whether you want to recharge the mobile or use headphones.

Always on the right flank, the button to launch the photo function and trigger a snapshot is located in a rather classical.

On the other side, ie to the left is the location for the microSD memory card, protected by a small cache as the connector charger / headset. Note that even if this location is easily accessible, it is not at all obvious to extract the memory card if you do your nails freshly cropped.
OS & Ergonomics

The LG Viewty mobile Smart is the second ship to the new user interface called S-Class 3D. For a review of all grades and all the defects of this new interface, we recommend you go test KM900 LG Arena. Here we will rather dwell on the differences in behavior of the S-Class 3D on both machines.

If the screen appears to us still a little small for such high resolution (WVGA, 800 x 480 pixels), the precision that was sometimes missing in the Arena is however far you go with the Viewty Smart. LG has had two more months compared to the Arena to refine its OS and it feels. The side "puffery" is still there, with many transparency effects and 3D often unnecessary, but oh so successful. However, all is fluid and never slows down even when you stuff the mobile contacts and multimedia content.

The interface of the Arena was already a success, but sometimes that provided a bit of frustration. The Viewty Smart gum it all, offering smooth navigation through menus and submenus. The system is both responsive and pleasant to handle. SMS and email, however, remain a bit problematic to type in landscape mode, again because of the size a bit small screen. It ends well by making it after hours of practice, but it does not type as fast as ever on the screen of an iPhone for example.

As mentioned in the previous section, a left side key can return to the cube. We always regret that the faces of the cube are not made in real time. As it stands, they only show the preset images, unrelated to the customization you have made. Another key between the button "hook" and "hung up" on the front lets go back in menus. These 2 buttons are perfectly placed and well fall under the fingers.
Functions Multimedia (Camera / Video)

Obviously, with such technical details, the Viewty Smart was expected to turn to its capabilities in photos and video. Like the Viewty in its time, the Viewty is a mobile Smart at the forefront of imaging. It embeds in fact a photo sensor 8 megapixel autofocus, which is still far from common. This is not the first LG KC910 Renoir offers since such a sensor already. Advances in photo are still visible between the two devices.

The shots that allows for the Viewty offers Smart sharpness and color rendition relatively flattering, especially in optimal lighting conditions. But be careful not to look too fast this phone a real compact camera. It can happen quite regularly that the finesse is not at the rendezvous on a cliché. The fault is certainly going to look on the software side of image processing that smooths too much detail to create an artificial picture perfect, but was unable to withstand an examination of details. As light decreases, the result is much better than is implied LED flash, although less powerful than a xenon flash but fared relatively well, provided they do not stray too far from its subject and avoid sudden movements. The image processing software provides increased performance and some options such as face recognition or smile work quite well.

The interface shaped touch wheel turns full, offering the possibility to adjust the usual options (white balance, scene modes, etc.).. Some flaws remain. Thus, even if it is generally fast enough, the Viewty is smart in some cases a bit too long before shooting. Similarly, the autofocus is done so sometimes a bit fanciful. As for the wheel-like interface, it is certainly attractive but not necessarily user-friendly.

If the Viewty Smart proves good enough for the overall picture, it also pleasantly surprised by the side of the video. He proposes to capture video in 720 x 480 pixels, which is currently better then. The definition videos this creates a very correct, although some devices are better. LG has partially corrected the problem of "white balance" that plagued the video function of the Arena. But a few small errors Adjustment color settings remain when you change light environment quickly. In low light, digital noise is a bit too far. Despite these small flaws, the video function of the Smart Viewty is one of the best available at present.
Other features (MP3, Web, email, GPS ...)

Playing multimedia content, the Viewty Smart offers exactly the same opportunities as the LG Arena. With the same quality and therefore the same defects. In fact, the music player is still as powerful. It offers all the standard functions such as creating playlists, different play modes (random, continuous, repeat, etc..), The classification of songs according to various criteria, etc.. There are also pleased with the Dolby Surround Mobile, which is a kind of ultimate equalizer. Rest assured, if it does not suit you, there are others at your disposal and you can even create one. For the rest, the audio rendering is excellent and can substitute Viewty Smart seamlessly with your old MP3 player. Always relative to the Arena, we regret, however, a double disappearance: the connector jack 3.5 mm and the beautiful hand-free kit. Here we return to hands-free kit into two parts which also serves as an adapter for a conventional helmet.

For photos, consultation is quite nice through the integrated tool that allows them to go the conventional way when you hold the phone normally and switches to landscape mode when you turn it horizontally. The view then changes since the tool in question is transformed into a gallery in 3D, very successful graphically. 3 pictures on the screen. That face the middle of the screen is flat but the other two are placed in perspective to give a beautiful effect of perspective. To navigate these images, simply peel off the finger in the direction you want.

Finally, viewing video is definitely the weak point of the mobile. This is not the player, fully functional otherwise, which is in question but rather the compatibility of formats. Once again, LG claims that his mobile is compatible with DivX / Xvid, even written on the back of the camera, and then ... nothing! However much you load different movies, TV shows, clips from the collection you patiently (and legally of course) up over time, nothing will. Only the Viewty DivX Smart recognizes is the DivX Mobile! In sum, we must encode the vast majority of your video files for playback on hope mobile. Since Renoir, LG has continued to claim in each of its tactile models upscale as DivX would be the appointment. And once again, the same disappointment.

On the web browser, if it proves perfect for viewing mobile web pages, surf the real Web can be problematic for cons. If the browser does not trouble too much to display the pages, however it is very slow for the navigation itself. For the heavier pages, it can take almost a second between when you make a move and when it is actually taken into account.

End on a somewhat more positive note, stating that the mobile chip embeds a compatible GPS A-GPS. On our test model, no navigation software was provided. By cons, this chip lets you still can géotagguer photos, that is to say they automatically insert the coordinates of where they were taken.
Conclusion (Plus Minus)

Finally, although not free of defects, the Viewty Smart has enough assets to tip the balance in his favor, provided it is offered at a decent price in a pack provider. Its original design should appeal to as many people and finesse to earn him favor with many pockets. Once the mobile turned on, the S-Class 3D interface is pleasant to use and packed with features. She even pays the luxury of being a bit more precise and responsive as the LG Arena, which makes it very pleasant to use. Too bad the web browser is not fully up to par.

The main function of this mobile multimedia course lies in its Camera 8 megapixel autofocus. It can capture images at once precise and equipped with an accurate rendering of colors although it is not yet up to the compact camera or mobile best of the genre. Capturing video in resolution 720 x 480 pixels is also one of the highlights of the phone. The music player is revealed for his part excellent, which is unfortunately not the case the video player. LG offers once again a cheap DivX with DivX Mobile supported only in addition to the usual mobile formats. Besides the multimedia features, the Viewty offers Smart phone functions very correct with a good quality audio transmission and reception. Autonomy is a little behind with one to two days tested through use.
