Introduction

Announced Feb. 12, the Nokia E90 Communicator comes rejuvenate the range of Finnish manufacturer, incorporating the same time the latter in the series "E" world number one.

The mission is so serious for this newcomer, which will satisfy users of older models, but also try to attract new customers through its new platform and greater openness to the media.

Primarily targeted at the enterprise market, Nokia E-series so far neglected the side of its terminal multimedia professionals. The E90 is a little mess up the habit thanks to a quality camera capable of recording very good video of a quality comparable to a Nokia N95, an integrated GPS receiver, stereo headphones, FM radio embraquée ...

Speaking of GPS, the E90 is the third terminal of the mark to carry a GPS receiver. Its operation is identical to the N95 and will be detailed later.

Commercially available for several weeks, the Nokia E90 is sold between 800 and 900 €. The keyboards are localized, that is to say that French-speaking countries offer models QWERTY example. Our test model was, however, a version with the QWERTY system in English.

Note that two colors should be available (Mocha and Red), even if we think of mocha models so far).

Positive points:

- System not as reactive
- Can be used for almost all applications since the external display
- Finally Vibrate this
- Screens sumptuous
- Autonomy Camel
- Connectivity impressive
- Hinge completely redesigned
- Quality photos and videos Negatives:

- The price
- Less accessories as above,
- Office Suite not complete, original
- Concerns Finishing (traces of the keyboard on the screen inside)
Box Contents Nokia E90

The box uses the colors of the professional range of Nokia, and strongly resembles that of the Nokia E65.

While unpacking we find:

- The Nokia E90
- A battery BP-4L 1500mAh
- The AC-4
- A Micro SD 512MB
- A USB cable DKE-2
- A stereo headset HS-47
- The various manuals and CDs

Even if the content is more than reasonable, it is unfortunate that Nokia does not provide more cradle (included with previous models) or protective cover.

Design of the Nokia E90

Even if the dimensions are barely higher than the Nokia 9300 and well below that of 9500, the E90 will not forget in your pocket. More weight is equal to the size of the unit, with 210g on the scales.

Note however that the manufacturing quality seems much more serious than the latest range, especially at the hinge (the 9500 has suffered from many problems at this level).

Externally, the biggest change is the large QVGA screen (320 * 240 pixels), replacing the aging of the older generation screen (resolution 128 * 128).

Another big change: the connectors PopPort disappears in favor of a Mini USB port, although more standard. The audio format is 2.5 mm, a pity not to have placed a 3.5 mm output, but adapters are available and cost almost nothing.

However, it is a pity that Nokia reserves the video output jack to the N95, while such a feature would certainly have been much appreciated in order to project presentations on the big screen.

At the opening, the internal screen captures immediate attention. This seems huge, even if the Nokia 9300 is broader.

Few phone can boast of such a large screen diagonal. The keyboard looks nice, although it is unfortunate that Nokia have changed the location of the directional pad (much more comfortable and accurate than that of 9300 by the way), which makes using the button "delete" and " enter "rather confused.

To complete the tour of the property, we find a second goal for video calls is present (which will force open the device for video conferencing), and that the platform change has resulted in the loss of two of the four buttons to the right of the screen.
Using the Nokia E90

First observation: the inner and outer part of the system are (finally) unified.

Stopping the device will then power off the inner part, which was not the case with previous models. Starting the E90 is pretty fast, slow old Symbian models is therefore a distant memory. There is no comparison even with the system (internal) of the previous range which put more than a minute to be operational during a restart.

This integrated system also allows a further step: the OS is the same on the external display and internal display. Use mode "closed" thus allows access to all your programs and all functions except video calls. To recall, the older generation had an interface can not be neater when using this mode.

The reactivity of the system is exceptional for Symbian S60, even using intensive multi-tasking. RAM more generous than the N95 for example has much to do.

Goodbye Symbian S80 Symbian S60 hello:

To provide better support for developers, who have shot under a platform to manage, Nokia S80 abandons the system in favor of S60, which has the enormous advantage of providing a repository for the huge range Communicator.

But owners of older models have purchased licenses for different programs under S80 will go through the box for "blue card" if they want an S60 version of the software, since the compatibility between the two platforms is zero.
Nokia supplies only software embraqué order to transfer its data from a previous Communicator, but that's all.

The OS has however been reworked to use the impressive size of the internal display device, and the look back a few applications on the old range, as the calendar for example.
Menu of the Nokia E90

Navigating the menus:

Contacts:

Apart from a revised look compared to conventional S60 smartphones to better adapt the interface with the large width of the screen, the proposed functions are identical to what is usually found in models of the Symbian brand.
The contact list is now displayed in the left column, and contact information are included in the column. Owners of old Communicator will not be disoriented. Sorting contacts by first name can be either by name. Creating groups of contacts with the photocall and ringing tone (a combination of a photo to a contact) are obviously the game.

Agenda:

Because the application "contacts", the agenda also take this huge area of pixels. The principle of the interface is the same: the left calendar, and the right events for the selected day. The appointment of the current day will be reported on the home screen, as proposed by smartphones and PDAs running Windows Mobile over the past few years.

Call records:

This application lists all your calls made / received / missed. The details of each call is associated. Information about your data consumption are also referenced.

Clock:

Everything concerning the date and time is here, as setting the alarm, for example. We can manage several different alarms, alarm or not. It is also possible to add cities in the world to see the local time.

Messaging:

Here again nothing new. This menu contains your SMS, MMS and your various mailboxes you have configured. The memory used will depend on your preferences (internal memory or memory card). Smileys still not integrated into the software, too bad. The mail client supports push mail "it is full and powerful (note: 2 accounts will automatically be raised to maximum).

Small detail: the text input can now be facilitated by using T9 via the external keyboard, something not possible with previous models.

There is one big black spot on the "Messaging", especially for customers from the old range, the S60 has resulted in the disappearance of the FAX.

Although it is possible to bypass the mail client, it is unfortunate that this function have been forgotten.

Entering text is easy, both via the external keyboard as the internal keyboard, even if we did not find it actually more convenient than the Sony Ericsson P1i despite its much larger size. It is also noteworthy that the internal keyboard leaves a few marks (starting with a little bit of cloth) on the internal screen.

NOKIA E90 - Menu 36

Another remark, positive this time: the keypad is now (somewhat) informed which of course is very useful when used in low light, and no longer requires us to tilt the screen so that it illuminates the keyboard.

Tools:

The different settings and customization parameters are integrated in this part. The text reading applications are also included.

Connectivity:

All connections, wired or not, may be set in this part. This mode is selected USB in the name of your Bluetooth device.

Office:

Main destination of this terminal: the mobile office.

Regarding the office suite: previously advanced and comprehensive, it must now pay a license apparently to get a full version, which seems in rather bad taste, considering the status and price of the camera! Those without extensive use of an office suite embraquée certainly be satisfied that proposed, but it's not really the target seems to me there.

To continue in office, it should be noted that the application "notes" has evolved on this model. It is now possible to integrate voice memos or photos in your notes, which can be very handy. A "classic" of this application is nevertheless always present.

Media

After work, entertainment. Here again Nokia did not skimp on resources.

The E90 even includes a stereo FM radio and MP3 player. The latter, although more basic than the version embedded in the N series models of the manufacturer, will be useful on long journeys.

The quality of the supplied headphones original limited however to use this feature somewhat regular basis.

The video player RealPlayer is still compatible with MP4 files.

Finally, let us turn towards the camera.
First, this function is usable only if the phone is in closed position.
Secondly, it is not possible to launch the photo-taking application via a long press of the shutter, as is permitted on a lot of phones. About the trip: its use is not the easiest.

Taking a photo after the development is often missed, and he must repeat, this would prove difficult for fans of mobile photo.

You will notice that the quality of shots is very good, better than a Sony Ericsson P1i for example.

Internet Browser

The integrated browser is always so pleasant to use, even if he now suffers from the embedded version of Safari in the iPhone. However the width of the screen allows the E90 display a certain comfort that few have telephones. Surfing on such a screen, as quickly and smoothly (thank you the connectivity HSDPA and WLAN) is really nice. The interminable delays and loads pages about 9500 or 9300, even WLAN are well forgotten.

Download:

This little program list by referencing software as compatible with your Nokia E90, whose software already included on your phone.
You can also download the example program for downloading podcasts developed by Nokia.

GPS:

Side of GPS, no big surprises, the proposed system is identical to that of the Nokia N95.
Loader comes with the software, you can download all the maps you want, but it will however go to the cashier to use the voice guidance.
If you do not pay, you will be able to be guided, but only via the card or a brief summary of the instructions.
It's a safe bet that software such as TomTom or Route 66 will soon offer a version running the E90 receiver built in, like Route 66 has done for the Nokia N95.

Facilities:

Contains the application manager and an application to transfer data from your old Communicator (9300/9300i/9500) to your E90.

Help:

Contains the help of your phone and a tutorial explaining the main features of your Nokia E90.
Conclusion

With a connection could not be more complete, a list of board functions very impressive and a reactive system as ever, the E90 has serious advantages to take over the Communicator range.

Autonomy Camel will use extensively without fear of falling out of power during the day, unlike the N95 for example. No worries either side of the receiving network or the quality of their conversation, they are very good.

So this perfect E90? Not really. For example it is regrettable that despite the price of the unit office suite is not delivered in full version, or design flaws such as the internal keyboard, which marks the screen are present.

However, the E90 looks like an excellent high quality product, very easy to use (unlike Windows Mobile products, less easy to take e, n in our hands for a lay audience) and extremely comprehensive. It will however not be afraid of distorting his pockets or breaking the bank.help to unlocking your phone or smartphone like samsung galaxy s2 s3 s4 or iphone 3 3s 4 4s 5 5s or nokia lumia or android ios windows phone 2013 .
