Google Nexus S

What's new Gingerbread? It should be noted an improved interface, better keyboard, better management of autonomy, support for VoIP, the NFC and multiple cameras and a better copy / paste.

As for the Nexus S, this is the second of Google smartphone. After the Nexus HTC is South Korea's Samsung, which was responsible for making the Nexus S.
Each year the Nexus? While it is too early to say whether Google has copied Apple's policy which is to release a smartphone flagship every year, it is clear that the Mountain View company share on the same basis.

After the Nexus One released in early 2010, this time the Nexus S, which showed the tip of his nose as early as December 2010 the United States and in France in February 2011. However, this smartphone was not supposed to emerge. At least if it was referring to remarks made by Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, who said that there would be no Nexus Two. And the guy did not lie. Just played shamelessly on the words. The "S", however its importance because it is not unlike that of the Galaxy S. This has nothing to chance by the way, Samsung is the manufacturer behind the two models. You will therefore not be surprised to learn that it will be much question of Samsung S Galaxy in the following lines. The comparison is inevitable as the two smartphones have in common.

But first take a look '? It the characteristics of the Nexus S. The first thing you notice is obviously the big screen of 4 inches with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels (WVGA). Unlike other more fortunate countries, France will only be entitled to the version of the Super LCD display, not the Super version AMOLED. Despite the large screen, the Nexus custody of reasonable size with 124 x 63 x 10.9 millimeters. It also offers a slightly curved front which will be discussed elsewhere.

This smartphone also has the distinction of being the first to board the Android operating system in its version 2.3 Gingerbread. As the Galaxy S, run all through a Samsung processor clocked at 1 GHz Hummingbird and based on an ARM Cortex A8. It is supported by 512 MB of memory (RAM). The graphic part is in turn managed by a graphics processor PowerVR SGX540. Multimedia side, the sensor 5 megapixel autofocus camera is supported by an LED flash. Strangely, he does not shoot more than 800 x 480 pixels. In terms of connectivity, the Nexus S operates without flinching 3G + (HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps), GPS (A-GPS), Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and appears compatible with the Wi-Fi n. He also brings something new by integrating an NFC chip. Finally, side storage, look no memory card reader? there are not any! The Nexus S has 16 GB of internal memory, not expandable.

Pack contents

Despite the premium positioning of the smartphone, it comes in a no frills package that includes just the essentials:

• charger
• Battery 1500 mAh
• A wired stereo headset
• A cable microUSB
• The manual
Appearance and Design

As mentioned in the introduction, the Nexus S Galaxy and S are two very similar smartphones, both by the technical design. Placed side by side, the resemblance between the two products is evident. But some things are still significantly differentiate the two devices. The Nexus S is a bit thicker and slightly longer than the Galaxy S with dimensions 124 x 63 x 10.9 x 64.2 mm against 122.4 x 9.9 millimeters. But the difference is hardly noticeable.

Owners of S Galaxy will not be jealous of the materials used for the new darling of Google. The hull of the Nexus S is indeed made of the same black plastic. This is not a panacea, however it is strong enough and comfortable touch to suit. Note here that the overall quality of the materials Nexus S is a tone below that of the Nexus manufactured by HTC. It was enjoying a higher level of production, including parts of the metal shell that gave a certain cachet to the whole.

That said, do not bury too quickly the model of interest here, because Samsung has made some changes beneficial in the design of the Nexus S. In its release, the Galaxy S was praised for its performance, but clearly singled out for its looks for many reasons: too wise, too inspired by the iPhone 3G / 3G and too plastic. Ally to the weight a little lighter than 119 grams, it gives weight to the Galaxy S tunes toys. Samsung has added 10 grams on the scales at Nexus S. With 129 grams, it seems neither too light nor too heavy.

The design was also reviewed. The logo? Samsung? disappeared from the front of the Nexus S and its edges have become rounded. Although they are small, these changes bring more simplicity and elegance to the whole. When the screen of the device is in standby or off, only the small slit in the mesh earpiece betrays the top of the bottom, but otherwise, the harmony is perfect. The grip of the newcomer is also better. In addition to the weight better distributed, the slightly curved shape of the screen is not only part marketing, and really offers a better feeling when you call.

Pill "all plastic" goes so much better with this model with the Galaxy S. But given the premium positioning on the one hand and finishing first much more convincing Nexus the other hand, one can not help but say that Samsung could have made an extra effort.

On the screen, the manufacturer has placed four touch-sensitive. They offer good sensitivity and vibration feedback when you press is convincing. The buttons are few on the periphery of the device. Just was it right to a key to lock / unlock, and another key that can increase or decrease the volume. Note that the microUSB connector does not take advantage of a small cache shrink, as is the case in the Galaxy S.

On the rear, there is the photo sensor 5 megapixel autofocus and LED flash. The battery cover is easy to remove. It reveals a generous 1500 mAh battery and SIM card slot. No need to look that of a microSD slot? as explained in the preamble of the test, there is none. This raises the "content" of the 16 GB of internal memory.
OS & Ergonomics

The family of Nexus shows what could happen in a world without Android user interface. Unlike Microsoft, which requires its own interface for its Windows 7 Phone, Google allows complete freedom for manufacturers to add their own interface with that of its Android OS. However, even if it is Samsung who built the Nexus S, it is nonetheless a Google Phone pure juice. It loads then an unmodified version of the patch 2.3 of Android. It is also the first to offer this update. As the first Nexus, the new model will become the yardstick by Google. Thus, it will be the first to receive updates of the operating system. This argument flies with geeks, techies and other early adopters. But it will leave the marble vast majority of users that cares more functions than numbers update. Note that if you're used to practicing builder Android smartphones such as Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG and HTC that add their own user interfaces, version "naked" Android will certainly be a discovery for you.

The differences between patch 2.2 and 2.3 Gingerbread Froyo are few. Graphically, the most glaring is the icons in the bar notifications have been redesigned. Otherwise, it is visually very similar to what we know from Android 2.1. The office (or "Home") always consists of several panels that you can place widgets, shortcuts to applications, folders, etc.. So there is nothing new under the sun since the widgets present here are those that are found in all Android smartphones. The main menu, which includes applications that has not changed either. This is a menu that scrolls up and down and up and down. It is decorated with a pretty nice little 3D effect. There is also a nice effect "CRT that goes" when you turn the phone on standby. There are also some small optimizations that we do not see at first, but the innovations are rather scarce. We would have appreciated that Google incorporates some additional features that the manufacturers offer for a long time as a system tray with more opportunities.

The big advantage of a virgin Google interface is undoubtedly responsiveness. Whatever the degree of skill builders, a custom interface is superimposed on the original and consumes system resources. Some, like HTC are doing with honor while it is sometimes more difficult for others (is not it Mr. Samsung?). The Nexus S surprises from the first moments of the flow it provides. It is a pleasure to navigate menus, with very few latency. Applications are launched without dead time and management of multi-tasking is exemplary.

This could have been a huge advantage of the Galaxy Nexus S S a few months ago, when it still trailed the sentence in 2.2. But in the meantime, Samsung had the good sense to provide an update 2.2.1 that controls virtually all the problems of responsiveness and fluidity of the Galaxy S.
Multimedia features (camera / video capture)

One of the great strengths of the Galaxy S at its output was the quality of photo and video capture. The Nexus S offers the same 5-megapixel photo sensor, able to take pictures in a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1920 pixels. These shots are successful. They take advantage of colors fairly faithful, contrasts and a convincing level of detail satisfactory.

Unlike the S Galaxy, the new Nexus also embeds an LED flash. It is certainly not only a xenon flash, but it still proves very useful in the dark. It does not allow to photograph more than one meter. It would also have appreciated that Samsung adds a physical button. As it is, you have to press the screen as with the Galaxy and S 4 the iPhone for example.

Video capture side is the great disappointment, however. For over a year, all high-end smartphones without exception filmed in 720p HD resolution, that is to say 1280 x 720 pixels. The next generation already pointing the tip of his nose will be able to capture video in Full HD, or 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels). Nexus S and in all this? The new flagship of the fleet just to catch Google in a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. At the initial aberration is grafted the disappointment of not really optimal quality clips captured. The colors are correct, but artefacts invite themselves fairly regularly in productions. Similarly, the abrupt exposure cause an adjustment period. All these software limitations are no doubt to the extent that the S Galaxy does not suffer the same problems. On the contrary, despite his six months of existence, it remains one of the best smartphones to film.

Hopefully an update next come put this straight. We are also almost certain that the fault is rather to pick the side of Google since the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play suffers the same problem-solving captured videos. Both smartphones have in common to be the first to run on Android 2.3?
Other Features (MP3 / Video, Web, GPS?)

As mentioned earlier in the test, the Google OS offers a great response. But behind the scenes is that Android is pretty low end features in this version naked. Of course, you will find all the faithful to the post Google applications. But it is far from the wealth of a Galaxy S (random) that includes such a small office suite, an application of radio, a newspaper reader or an app for Twitter. And yet, you can then add all these apps from the Android Market, so we do not keep strictly to the Nexus S on this point. What is more problematic, however, is poverty of its multimedia offering.

As you can see from reading the previous part, the results of the video / photo capture of Nexus S is rather mixed. It's worse, much worse even in video playback. For starters, you do not have an icon dedicated to the video player. Either you use YouTube, which is obviously why Google wants to push us, or we need to get the videos from the Gallery application which also includes photos. The photo viewer / video in question has not really changed since Android 2.1. However, it is quite pleasant to use, offering to pass some effects nice enough. She still can not view photos in their full size, but only in a light version. It's better for the flow, but you lose all the details if you want to zoom. The real problem is the lack of compatibility with all popular video formats like DivX / Xvid. The Nexus S offers a trip back a few years since it recognizes only the videos to MP4 and 3GP. It's embarrassing in the absolute, and downright shameful when compared to the S Galaxy which has yet provided the basis for its design. The smartphone from Samsung reads almost all video formats and even shows you can broadcast a video. Mkv 720p.

The video is not the only disappointment of this product: screen also brings its share of disappointments. Let's start by saying that this display technology is inherently Super LCD good enough. The problem is that the United States and England were treated to the version of Super AMOLED Nexus S, while the rest of the world must be content with the version that we test LCD Super here. And it's not a battle of technical terms to Geek. The difference between the two rendering technologies is obvious. The Super AMOLED has more marked contrasts, with black unmatched depth. It also offers better brightness and vivid colors. For completeness, note nevertheless that the purists of the image are the Super AMOLED screens accentuate the colors too. But the vast majority of users prefer to display more realistic. To return to the Nexus S, its display is not dishonorable. Just avoid to compare it to that of its near-twin. But again, the pill goes wrong for a product offered at this price.

Still finish this overview of multimedia features on a positive note: the music player. Again, this is not a panacea in terms of evolution as it is the same drive that is found for several versions of Android. However, it is really functional and has all the most practical options (playlist, etc.).. More importantly, it offers a truly compelling sound reproduction, provided of course to add to it a better helmet than the one supplied in the pack.

The Nexus S found a little with its superb features such as connected web browser. The latter shows in every way exceptional. Updates to Android and 10.2 2.3 of the Flash add even more speed and comfort to an already excellent browser. The zoom in and out are in a very fluid. We particularly appreciated the fly resizing columns of text to fit perfectly on the screen, providing an optimal reading of the articles. Real websites do not be afraid to Nexus S and it is surprisingly close to the ergonomics of a real web browser on a bigger screen.

We appreciate a lot having Google Maps navigation built into the phone. This is a real solution to free navigation. The fact that it is fully controllable with the voice is very comfortable when you're driving. Google is based on its speech recognition technology that also uses in the rest of the smartphone. For example you can type text or web search just by speaking. Recognition is not always accurate, but it still has good results if you articulate properly.

The Nexus S also differs from other Android smartphones available in France, including S Galaxy, by integrating NFC technology. This technology is mainly used for contactless payment, and the Navigo pass for the Paris region. But there is little chance that it will be useful, even if the NFC is democratization in the coming months by a magic wand. The technology used for this smartphone is that it will at best only able to read the "tags", a kind of small labels that contain information. But for all applications really like the saliva of the NFC transport card or paperless portfolio, it is necessary that the system is secured by the SIM card. Which is unfortunately not the case that getting the Nexus S.
Conclusion

Google announced that version 2.3 of its OS would be more energy efficient. And this is the case since the Nexus S is almost two days with a load where the Galaxy S and his contemporaries make weapons in one day. Call quality is also been treated as the sound reproduction is especially good conversations.

As we have seen throughout the test, the Nexus S is a good product, although it suffers from considerable gap in multimedia. It has the same hardware configuration as the S Galaxy, namely a Samsung processor clocked at 1 GHz Hummingbird and supported by 512 MB of RAM. Configuration in the muscular output of the Samsung S Galaxy in the summer of 2010, but that may soon find themselves with outdated double c smartphones? Heart that will soon invade the shelves of our stores in the coming weeks . This does not forgive the price at which it is currently proposed. But if you do not want to wait for the release of these products must still confront the Nexus S at his best enemy, the S Galaxy, before making a choice. We told you again and again, these products are very similar, both in terms of hardware and design.

The Nexus S has for him a look more successful, more differentiated than the Galaxy S. Google also provides the claw on one side "hype" which can boast Samsung. But these are the only assets of the newcomer. Otherwise, it's not far from the Berezina. The Galaxy S literally crushes rival in terms of multimedia. It has a much better screen, many video codecs and is able to film in HD. Its software base is richer, including an office suite, games, a Twitter client and other embedded apps right out of box. But what is there to Nexus S? Responsiveness flawless? Yes ... and no. For even in this field, the Galaxy S has made tremendous progress since the 2.2.1 update. And patch 2.3 is expected to arrive in the next few days. The situation is so overwhelming for the Nexus S, which is (again) yet a very good product. So unless you are a fan of the naked version of Android, you should instead provide you with the Galaxy S, or better yet keep your sub for the Galaxy S2 Samsung, Motorola or LG Atrix Optimus 2X
